What key accordions in Scotland?
« on: June 30, 2011, 03:57:57 PM »

Hello all, I will be travelling to Scotland shortly in order to teach an accordion class. It has been advertised as a class for both 1 and 2 row players. I'm wondering how are most accordions in Scotland tuned (B/C etc.) . I know this seems a really stupid question, but if somebody would care to explain to me the predominant systems ( if any) I would be most grateful!

BCC# seems to dominate they are quite defensive about it on here, Chromatic Button Accordion and Piano Accordion are well represented as well, BC boxs and in some areas C#D but this seems to be frowned upon by some but not all, mory

where abouts are you going? Liam

There are not so many diatonic boxes in Scotland now as far as I can tell piano accordions and CBAs predominate.

I thought it was almost a regional thing Theo, the further up the more likely you were  to encounter the wee beasties   :D

Liam,
Up there, it's virtually certain that you'll encounter mostly BC boxes. Possibly some BCC# as well. Single row, it's anyone's guess - C, G or D. You're not likely to encounter anything that will give you any problems. I hope it goes well!

Thats good news! As I had no hand in advertising the classes, keys weren't specified, and so I have been worrying that I'd be faced with a bunch of varrying melodeons, trying to come up with tunes to suit all of them!

And the name Melodeon is not well known, tends to be called a button box.

This project seems to have more than one 'Braveheart' feature. The thought of turning with a D/G to teach a mix of B/C, C/C#. a CBA and a piano accordion, all manned by advancers with a couple of beginners ... OK, lets call it a challenge  ::)   Hopefully the promoter might advise you better than us (see you have a lot of systems at home). Otherwise it might be prudent to assume them all competent and teach "music". Good luck.

Oh, it's a well-enough known term. In Scotland, all single-row boxes will invariably be referred to as "melodeons", and the National Mod (Gaelic) has senior and junior Melodeon competitions, a Melodeon being considered to be a 1- or 2-row button accordion with push-pull basses.
