Tune of the Month for July 2011: Three Around Three
« on: July 01, 2011, 12:18:48 AM »

Another classic session tune wins Tune of the Month. A jolly little reel/polka thing with a funky bass run, normally played in G (and quite often in a pair with the Rochdale Coconut Dance whenever I've heard it played).

Here's our own Howard Mitchell playing it on a G/C: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATnSwur7RZ8

Courtesy of the ABC posted at www.thesession.org (in A major), and a bit of automatic transposing from ABCMus, here it is in G:

Code: [Select]
X:1
T:Three Around Three
R:barndance
M:4/4
L:1/8
K:Gmaj
|:e2|d2 BA G2 G2|A2 BA G2 D2|ED EF G2 AB|c2 B2 B2 A2|
d2 BA G2 G2|A2 BA G2 D2|ED EF G2 Ac|B2 G2 G2:|
|:e2|d2 ef gf ed |e2 e2 eg fe |d2 B2 B2 AG |FG AB A2 e2|
d2 ef gf ed |e2 e2 e2 d2 |ef ge fg af |g2 g2 g2:|

A cracking tune really, and well worth learning if you don't know it already.

Cheers,

Clive

One of my favourite tunes. I've been playing the Lewes Arms version [more or less] on steel-string acoustic guitar for ages. Just started looking at it again and trying to work out why what I play isn't quite what I think it ought to be. And along comes the ABC above which at a quick glance may sound more like what I expect. One to have fun with.

Still haven't got mike, camera of software sorted, of course.

Its one I've attempted before...but I always end up smudging the notes...too many ins and outs...I need to work on the crossrowing.

I noticed in the ABC notation this is called a barndance.  What is a barndance and what type of dancing is typically done to it?  A scottische seems to work well with it if it's not played too fast.

The tune is for a dance of the same name -

THREE AROUND THREE: three gents face three ladies.
Top Lady pulls line of LADIES ROUND GENTS.
Top gent pulls line of GENTS ROUND LADIES line.
Top couple CAST to middle place, & SWING partner.
Then they RIGHT-hand-STAR with couple above them (old 2nds),
(No Left-hand-star back.) then Tops dive under ARCH of 3rd couple .

I also know that 6/8 tune as "Pleasures Of The Town" - it seems to be very seldom played (I'm the only player I know of personally who plays it!) and I came across it many years ago in the Vaughan Williams library while ploughing through Maud Karpeles's field notes. But I've always known "3 Around 3" as "The Pleasures Of The Town" as well - I remember being a little surprised on discovering the 6/8 tune that it was so utterly different from the tune of that name I already knew.  But then, there's nothing very unusual in people knowing the same tune by different names or different tunes by the same name. (Or different dances, come to that).

Incidentally, The Session http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/9030 notes it as being also known as "The Pleasure Of The Town".

Howard: clikced on the vid, just to get a flavour....
What a wonderful sound that Galliard makes, it's so mellow and gutsy.......  not sure if I can put it into words, but it just hit my ear as something special.
I enjoyed your playing too!
Better go listen again ;)

So did I, I'll not be listening again though and it will have nothing to do with Howard's excellent playing. I don't say this often but I really dislike this tune, I can see no merit in it at all, others obviously like it so I'll say no more for fear of offending someone!

On the dance front, I know it as a basic Border dance, very similar to the barndance as above.
Several sides dance the version I was taught, including Iron Men.

Thanks all for the comments about my playing and the box.
It's very handy having my video as the example. It means I don't have to make a new recording which is very handy for as we speak I'm on my way to Normandy for a short holiday so may not be posting for a while.

There's a story behind the Gaillard. I saw it for sale some years ago on the web and contacted the seller only to find it was another box player at a session I used to frequent in Burton. The deal was done the following week and I've enjoyed playing it ever since.

We (Devil's Dyke) use it with From Night Till Morn for the Badby dance 'Broad Cupid'.
