The passing of master accordionist Philippe Bruneau
« on: August 08, 2011, 10:05:09 PM »

Philippe Bruneau died on August 8, 2011.

Monsieur Bruneau's music meant a lot to me and every time I listen to him play, I feel like the arts and mysteries of music are being unlocked for me.

There is a (French) Facebook page for posting memories of Philippe Bruneau: https://www.facebook.com/groups/234650539906411/

Please visit my blog and use the comment feature to post a memory of Philippe Bruneau and his music:

Thanks for telling us. I met him briefly under a chestnut tree in St Chartier. He was in didactic mood (guess that's the Man) and I watched him teach a young Frenchman how to play a one row in five keys!  Homage à lui

Hi Andy,

This is very sad news.  M. Bruneau's music inspired me also and always will.

Sad news indeed.
The music of Philippe Bruneau was pivotal in my interest in French Canadian music which started when working in Montreal in 1985.
I have a music book, Philippe Bruneau, Musique Traditionelle pour accordeon diatonique. It has one "Brandy" from William Gagnon of Chicoutimi in it which is in 3/2 with four parts and played ABCDAB.

A brandy is a three time reel I believe. Very sorry to hear this news, a master player.

Just hoisted a cold one to  PB while re-listening to his Philo 1973 vinyl, which may have been his first "mass market" disk?

(I had seen him, I think, at the Fox Hollow festival in MA, USA before then (cannot remember for sure, but think yes, maybe 1970?)

Especially, his side A, with Overture and Finale is one of THE BEST dance progressions.

I am not sure, but think that he dedicated Charlevoix' Reels to Jean D'Arc Charlevoix, though he never said so.  I always figured them for sweethearts?

Of course, the killer for me, is that although the cover shows PB with his modified Hohner single row, the A side was actually done on a GCF.

As an aside,  Yvan Brault really showed how piano accompaniment should be done.

PB, RIP. Laissez les bon temps roulez in Heaven. (never could spell in French!)

I am very fortunate to have a video and book of/by Phillipe Bruneau.
He was a major influence to me and the reason I explored Quebec music.
RIP

A box player named Eric Bonneau recently posted some great videos of Philippe Bruneau on the Facebook tribute page.  Links here:

It might be necessary to join the group in order to view the videos.  For all the admirers of Philippe Bruneau, it is worth joining this Facebook group to see some great photos and video footage.

Wonderful stuff Andy.  Do you know the name of the tune he is playing on the red four-stopper?  (The one without the step dancing.)

I was sorry to hear the news...

Philippe Bruneau was a great player and a great figure of canadian traditional music!

There is a very nice recording of a live performance (Concert au folkclub Le Vierpot à Boeschepe, France) available on:

http://archivesdufolk59-62.blogspot.com/2010/03/philippe-bruneau.html

(click on téléchargez ici )

If you have any questions about what he says in French, I can help!
