Greetings from Wisconsin, USA
« on: September 19, 2011, 02:24:24 PM »

Hi all,

After moving during the North American heat wave last month (with special care given to a UHaul truck full of instruments), my wife, kids, and I are pretty well settled here in Madison, WI for the next year.  She's on sabbatical from her job as a professor; I had to give up my job at the arboretum which didn't come with the privilege of such an extended leave so I'm currently looking for another biologist gig.  After a few years living in subtropical Miami, it's great to be back in a temperate climate as the leaves begin turning on the maples, ash, and aspen.

But you may want to know about the melodeons and players here in the northern midwest US! So far I've met a good few of the folks who play Irish music here in Madison, including Alan Ng who has some lovely tunes on 1-row melodeon (Castagnari) as well as fiddle. . . and from casual comments I'm starting to hear about a few C#/Ds, B/Cs, and concertinas being played at home and not brought out to the sessions yet.  I met another concertina player who doesn't play Irish music and sold me a B/C that I repaired.  And then had a nice visit and a good few tunes with a man who recently retired from a job as a folklore specialist for the state.  He plays a big Melodija button box for Croatian (and other european) music, and was able to tell me about many other accordionists around Wisconsin from the various polka, button box, and other traditional music scenes.  Of course, chemnitzer concertinas (and related instruments) have a good following here too but those are OT for this forum.

Should be an interesting year.  I'll hope to meet the musicians from Milwaukee and see old friends in Chicago, IL and in Minneapolis / St. Paul MN.

Here in Madison, there is a volunteer group that has been supporting Irish music by booking small-to-medium size venues for musicians who are touring this part of the country.  I'll post details of upcoming concerts with Brendan Begley and with Jackie Daly in the relevant subforum here.

Finally, any melnet members in the area or passing through are welcome to PM me.  Looks like I may have a little more time for actually playing music than I have had in a good few years.

A highly satisfactory prospect, Paul, and I am jealous. Perhaps you'll have more time for posting more of your interesting info. on here, too. Make the most of it before you find that biology gig (maybe don't look too hard?)  (:)
