Well I hope it's not bad form to post my own angst on anotther's, but..

I've gradually lost motivation to play guitar and other stringed instruments--into which I've invested 30-40 years of tuition--since reassuming a relationship with woodwind playing.  The only strings I really want to play, now, are fiiddle, occasionally, and doublebass which is something I play out with.  It feels strange to have so little compulsion for something I spent so many years pursuing...a bit like a former mate, I spose.

Put it in its box, take up another hobby, get bored, happen to walk into a pub with a session going on, then off you go again!

Either that, or take Viagra.  :||:

Seriously, find a bunch of other players to have a session with, even if only once a month. Plus try to learn new tunes but simple ones, not complex stuff off CDs.  Experiment with the box in private and see what you can come up with - I mastered a 12 bar blues in A by doodling around in private!

Also, experiment with one simple tune , like Old Joe the boat is tipping over. Try to play it in Reggae style (on the off beat), then teutonic beer drinking style (bags of right hand chords) then whatever takes your fancy. Have a laugh with it, and you'll soon pick up that youthful enthusiasm again.

But if you don't, put it in its box, take up another hobby,, (see above....), but DO NOT sell the box or give it away. Leave it until it calls to you again (and it will, believe me)

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

Why not? It's an asset not a detriment. If you can choose a great tune from a hundred others you're a genius.  8)

Trouble is we might just be wrong.  :o

Thought I'd tag onto this thread. Feeling really down about my playing lately. I'm at a standstill progress-wise on the melodeon (and going downhill backwards on the fiddle). Totally lost my enthusiasm for playing music.

And I thought you were enjoying yourself on Saturday! I am giving Oscar a try-out, but not having much success with Zuppa Inglese. (But I will, I will!!) See all of the above methods of re-kindling that enthusiasm.

I can't believe after hearing your playing you've only been at it only been a few months...you are soooo better than me. Wish I could improvise like that and make it sound great.

Several people around here are like that, but I think you'll find in every case they are already experienced musicians (many years in some cases) on other instruments. It makes a huge difference, even if the other instrument is quite different like a guitar or fiddle.

Yep, wot he said!

Many of those tunes, Sarah, I have been playing on my fiddle for quite a while. And don't forget, improvisation is just another word for getting it wrong, but with attitude!

Now hold out that wrist...SLAP!

Well if it makes any of you feel any better, I've been playing my box the last week.  After reading this thread, I started thinking squeezy again, and dug my Corso out of the closet.  Yesterday I learned a Rebikov tune I used to play on guitar.  And Friday I jammed with a new group using squeezy of all things (albeit, PA....but STILL!  :||:)

Yes, and as a retired Health Visitor I ought to be ashamed of myself. ;) I shall report myself straightaway!

Gypseylad, you know what you said about the fiddler - well I find myself watching the piper at our sessions - while I'm playing fiddle - and I have NO IDEA why I do it, but it kind of helps me find the tune. I suspect it has more to do with the pattern and rhythm of his fingers - it certainly is NOTHING  to do with the notes he is playing as I wouldn't know anyway. It's a funny old thing, this music making.

And you can't ever compare yourself - or I would have given up before I began. You just have to wait for the spark to come round again, and hop on board. The trick is to remember what the enthusiasm felt like and hold that thought, trusting it will come back. It usually does.

I have to always try to sit opposite another box player (preferably someone who can play by ear) to see what row (key) thier in and what octave or else I get tottaly stuck. I just don't have ear for music.

I'm actually seriously contemplating getting rid of (or maybe storing them) instruments so I have a maximum of two as I really don't have time to put in the practice on them they need. And I could concentrate on the 2 remaining instruments.
As its less 'lost enthusiasm' more 'stressing out'. Its like I'm constantly trying to find some time to play but then having other stuff crowd it out.

How many are you trying to learn?   Your wording suggests at least 4!!!   That is just bonkers.
Trying to learn even two instruments at once is hard hard hard,  much better to make the best job you can of learning one.   When you can play that happily without having to think too much about it then maybe consider one other...
