Fantastic Les.  Can you explain how you did this as I would like to have a go at a B/C chart.

Hi, thanks for that, I think people will find that useful. However, that is a huge PDF file. I notice that you produced the image in a well-known image editor and then embedded it in a PDF file.

The original files on melnet are gif files and there is a reason for this. The information in the file in this is made up of large areas of solid white and then small areas of black. Images like this (where there are few or no gradations of colour or grey-scale) compress very well as bit maps of which gif is a widely used format.

This image appears to be a jpeg, which though it can be compressed more than it is here, is not ideal for this type of image as it will lose a lot of image quality as it is compressed. Jpegs are good for pictures with a lot of graduated colour or grey-scale information.

Just to make it clear, it's not the embedding in the PDF which is the problem, you need to export the image or convert it in the image editor first.

... edited for grammar.

Ok - used the original melnet layout and created lots of little staves in an app called TablEdit (Mac and PC).  Brought everything into Photoshop and created loads of layers.  Shunted everything around, resized etc. and saved as a pdf.  All done on a Mac but I'm sure it could be done on a PC.

Here's the chart converted to a PDF file from a GIF which gives a better resolution and a much smaller file size (see attachment).

Try exporting from Photoshop as an indexed PNG and embedding that in your PDF. I can get it down to 40k that way  :D

Bloomin' heck, that's bloomin' marvellous, Les!!!!! :-* Absobloomin'lutely fab! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Just need to open mel.net up on the Big Computer Upstairs so I can print it off, and possibly laminate it. This means I can learn tunes with the chart in front of me, and probably, if I use it often enough, the names of the buttons will filter in along with the tunes.

Great job. I should patent it! ;)

Very nice.
One thing that this also VERY graphically points out (related to another thread) is that for most folk music, the high notes are (mostly if not entirely) irrelevant.

Thank you for this chart Les, I'm finding it really useful in helping to learn the notes.
And, sorry to hijack this thread (your Learning to play the Melodeon ones have disappeared!), but just to say thank you too for your video blogs - as a complete beginner I have found these fantastic - although made me slightly homesick at the sound of English birdsong and cricket!  Great stuff, please keep going with them!

Thanks for your kind comments. I've decided to re-record blog 10 as it made reference to a form of tab I was developing but have now abandoned in favour of "dots". I will make a fresh post with all blogs in one place as over time they have become scattered across the pages.  Hmm - cricket and birdsong are great but I guess you're not missing the English "summer"!!!

I forced myself not to mention PNG, I don't want to go getting some sort of a reputation   :-X

Why? GIF went out with Compuserve (does anyone else even remember that?)

About the only thing GIF does that PNG doesn't is animations.

Well ... I too prefer PNG for all sorts of reasons (colour depth, transparency options, better compression in most cases), but my recent posts seem to be covering more computer stuff than melodeons, so I left it out for simplicities sake.

GIF was once covered by software patents granted (contraversialy!!) by the US patent office that Unisys sought to enforce with licence payments. PNG was developed as a free/open access alternative to GIF.

The patents have run out so that is no longer an issue.

Edited to add: animations are coming to PNG. I'm in two minds as to whether that's a good or a bad thing  :D
