Wrong is right?
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:30:52 PM »

I have read that there is no right or wrong way to play the melodion, not to say that I agree or disagree.

Wondered what you folk think?  ::)

Rees. Thanks for your reply.  I am only quoting what I have read.
I am a newcomer to the melodeon and just wanting to learn.

If you have an informed opinion, please post it.

Thanks

You're obviously looking for an out, Ron. I'm afraid there is none. Whatever you are doing is wrong. Get used to it.  :P

After much deliberation, here is my "informed" opinion:

There is no right or wrong way to play any instrument.

Do what you do do well  :)

Ever tried sucking on the bell of a brasswind, Rees? ;D
Yeah, I know, I've got a mouth big enough to cope with a tuba. :(

If you solder up the little hole at the far end and fill the thing with beer, it can be well worth sucking (and probay improves the sound as well :D)

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

I have read that there is no right or wrong way to play the melodion, not to say that I agree or disagree.

There are a lot of approaches to the instrument.  Although there are some recommended and advised techniques, if you browse around here you'll see heated discussions of such obscure and arcane issues as whether or not to use a thumb strap, which way up to hold the box, what the best tunings are, which fingers to use for what, how to ornament, and just about every other aspect of playing.  There's no single consensus because there's no one "classical" school of melodeoning.  I suspect that as the Newcastle University Folk Programme prospers, there will (perhaps already is?) be a distinctive style identified with those who've come through it.  But there are an awful lot of folks who just learn on their own, and so it goes on . . . . If you listen to various players, both live and recorded, you'll hear a lot of unexpected stuff: complex and seemingly impossible chords, rattling bellows, snapping air buttons, hammering fingers, smooth, clean and apparently effortless runs.  And then lots of people just pumping out tunes.

I've just acquired a copy of the "Pigeon on the Gate" CD pair which is recordings of East Anglian melodeon playing. The technique sounds fairly crude in places (especially when you realise that many of them are playing one-row boxes not much younger than they were and few have more than two spoon-lever bass buttons) but the sound is terrific!
