Yes.

And no. Things are a little more complicated than the way you have stated them.

On a standard D/G box, you can play in any key with either one or two sharps.

Keys (commonly used in folk music) having two sharps
D major
B minor
E dorian
A mixolydian

Keys with one sharp
G major
E minor
A dorian
D mixolydian

If you have accidentals on your keyboard, you might be able to manage another couple of keys in addition to the ones listed above. (We won't get into tunes with gapped scales (missing notes) here, since this might fry your brain at this early stage  :D )

hehe yes im already fried! i dont have accidentals so thats no worries, so i gues that when im thumping away on my bass notes and i hit a note that doesnt sound right i should try a different bass button, i guess the inside bass row are for those awkward notes!
well, awkward to me!
many many thanks mate! ;D

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

The problem you have got is that that the "minor" bass notes are not always in the right direction.  you have got to play across rows to make sense of the minor modes and their basses.

Playing across the rows is the way to get a variety of basses in all keys.  eg for a G chord when in D, or an Em chord when in G, or an A chord when in A.
