What are your Nemesis tunes?

By that I mean tunes you try (and want to) to play but every time you do it ends in failure. I recently defeated 'Cheshire Waltz' nemesis tune of mine, although on concertina rather than melodeon.

The one that I have NEVER been able to get up to speed with all the notes is Girls in Boisdale. Really not built for a D/G melodeon! Oh, and my G minor crooked tune from Quebec I don't think has ever been played through without a mistake somewhere, including the half dozen times that I've performed it.

Yes to Jiggery Pokerwork. I can 'kind of' play it, but getting that last 10% to get it up to a decent standard is a long time coming.

And this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcNTVnAaEpA&feature=related

... Stephane Delicq's 'Les Novis'; a beautiful apparently simple mazurka, but that B part! I've since figured out that it's a lot easier if you try it on a full sized box than (say) a preciosa. Position of the fingers of the hand and all that.

The perfect nemesis tune has to be just easy enough so you think you've got a fighting chance with a bit of practice, and just hard enough so you can't.

Cheers,

Clive

AS "the tune too far" ? a Swedish schottiche - thought it was Grupa fischotiche but it not onthe LP I thought it was so not too sure. Lovely tune and uses every single button on the G row.

Third part goes from G .. into G minor ... and somehow the fear of going wrong is what makes me go wrong.

one that wasn't a Nemesis until last August was 'Irish Washerwoman'  , could play it  (on concertina ) at Rapper speed no problem ......... until glancing up from the 'Scratch Rappers' impeccable footwork to see them doing unheard of things with long balloons   ;)  ;D

.... I corpsed and could hardly play for laughing, luckily musicians with stronger nerves than mine carried on and saved things   :Ph :||:

haven't been able to play it at speed in public since without getting the giggles and  fluffing notes  ;D

The past two tunes of the month have both proved a bit too much to get ready in time... (there, I admitted it!)

My real nemesis so far is this version of the found harmonium:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuVOanmsjSY.  I saw this, and thought I've got to do that! so far I can about handle the first bar at a quarter speed!

I don't know about a tune that's always defeated me, but there are a couple of tunes I play regularly that I really dislike and I ALWAYS make a dog's breakfast of them in public, regardless of the fact that I can sit at home and play them happily as many times as you like. My biggest bête noir in this respect is Banbury Bill; yes, I know it's a simple enough tune, and I know I can play it, but I just don't like it and I don't think I've ever played it for a whole dance in public without a c**k-up somewhere along the way. Strange, isn't it?

Newly acquired G/C Hohner Viktoria. Also Fender Jazz bass, Telecaster, Stratocaster, Epiphone Sheraton, Charvel-Jackson 00-style acoustic guitar, Danelectro 12-string and other stuff..........

If  "I don't think has ever been played through without a mistake somewhere" is the requisite for a nemisis tune, then all my tunes fall into that category  :||: ;D

I seem to get a mental block on most of Andy Cutting's tunes.
The History Man, In Continental Mood and Flatworld have all squirmed out of my grasp, despite being really not very hard.

Probably Jiggery Pokerwork too, but I haven't really tried that one.

The one that has defeated me for years is Le Petit Bal de la Marine, which Emmanuel Pariselle tried to teach us at Melodeons at Witney 2005. The A music isn't too bad but I just can't get the hang of that awkward rhythm in the B music. The myriad accidentals in the B music don't help, either. I wonder whether others who attended that workshop managed to nail the tune. Perhaps I should try to find a more melodeon-friendly version of it.

Mine is J.B. Milne - my brain knows it, but my fingers don't want to play the fast arpeggios at the end of the A and B parts!

The Rattler....no, not Morgan Rattler, just The Rattler. Northumbrian tune, nearly learned ( but not quite) from the playing of Brian Peters. Oh dear...that B music....

Not really strange to be honest. My pet hate simple tune that I always mess up after the first time through (if I make it that far!) is Shepherd's Hey. After the first A music I lose the will to live.  ::) I would honestly like to play it well because it's a favourite of the dancers but goodness me it's like the Macca D of morris ...

Lads A Buncham, repetitive nonsense that it is, happens to be a great favourite of mine and rolls out in a way that other tunes never will. Music is odd isn't it? I've struggled for months to get the upper hand with Stoney Steps and I now have it reasonably playable at a decent speed (concertina I hasten to add) and yet Shepherd's Hey hangs around like a bad smell mocking me. Pah! Pah! and thrice Pah!  ::)

Roaring Jelly, a la Gog Magog Molly. Faaarr too quick for my fingers to cope with. In fact, a lot of Gogs tunes are actually quite complex, and don't really sit under my fingers too well.
