an unusual but extraordinary combination is box with double bass.  There is some great bass playing on Stephane Delicq's albums, Markku Lepisto has released a box (melodeon and CBA) and bass album and Andy Cutting has done some brilliant stuff with Tim Harries.  Its a shame that Danny Thompson never got together with a box player.

I really like box and clarinet too.... Delicq again and also Mark Perrone.

I can think of one or two morris sides that would benefit by actually thinking about this question.

I'm not sure cotswold morris and big bands are a good combination anyway.
Other traditions such as north west and border are different and thrive on a well-balanced 'wall of sound'.

Andy

Cotswold bands do not work. They either go two ways; the group doesn't play together, and the emphasis is all over the place, or you can get a group of musicians working together to put emphasis in the correct place, but then it sounds very robotic and militaristic. Cotswold music should be organic, and it's very difficult to do that with more than two players.

It's not about performance - I have no trouble sitting and listening to a group of Cotswold musicians play Cotswold tunes. However, playing said tunes doesn't aid the dance. Playing for Cotswold Morris is entirely different to anything else; you have to watch the every footfall, and be completely sympathetic to the dancers (usually follow no.1 or who you consider to be the best dancer in the set). When I play for Morris, I spend all my time looking at the ground, watching the dancers' feet. It's not simply a case of 'just playing the tune', you really have to add emphasis in certain places, and it varies every time.  So, I'm not saying it shouldn't be done because it sounds bad to listen to, I'm saying it shouldn't be done because

Yes, admittedly, one musician doesn't make for an organic performance (there are a lot of, quite frankly, crap Morris musicians out there {there are a lot of crap dancers/sides too, mind...}), but I've never seen a Cotswold band work.

Ollie is exactly right.
There are so many variables. As Ollie says, who do you follow?
In a set of 6 you will often find subtle variations between each dancer, timing for one will be out for another.
....then who do the rest of the band follow, because if they try and follow the main musician they'll be slightly out.
Build into this the venue or occasion. If it's the end of the day following a long day's dancing you imperceptably speed it up cos the dancers are tired. If it's a high pressure ceilidh spot at a prestigeous festival, the dancer's adrenaline will be squirting out their ears and will dance higher, so musicians need to dance slower to accommodate this.
For Border or North West, the nature of the dance is far more figure based ( and militaristic for NW ) so big bands work easier, but the stepping in Cotswold is difficult to play for.

Before I get lured into the "How many musicians for Cotswold" debate (and I could...) in reply to the OPs question...Katie Howson's Martin and Jeannie Harris' HA114 (I think) on Veteran's Unbuttoned....

And for a bit of shameless self promotion, I think our Lisa and I make a nice noise...Salterelle something or other and a Castagnari whotsit...(though we both play Hohners if it's in C/F.. :||: :|||: :|||:)

Tried to insert image, but failed miserably...try www.allblackedup.co.uk

And of course, Jason Rice and Mark Bazeley...

Did that...then couldn't work out what to do next :|bl....

As Dicky Three would have it..."I am too childish foolish for this world..."

Mind you, most children of my acquaintance could probably work it out...

Baz: Well resisted. One for the bar after methinks.....  :|glug
... and I agree both you and Lisa do make a nice sound too.

I'll leave the rest of the comments hanging there  ;)
