Not a melodeon thing, but something for those who say the only thing they like about Christmas is the songs.  I'm not religious myself, but I love Christmas because it's a time of year you get a bit of extra time off all at the same time to visit your folks.  Did that this weekend just gone, and we went to see a show where Tim Minchin sang this song (accompanied by Professor Brian Cox on the piano, as it happens), and I sat there with a happy tear rolling down my cheek thinking "this song is all about me".  It was a beautiful moment and I wanted to share it.  Perhaps I might arrange it for melodeon for next year, but I'm not sure I'd do it justice.  The title of the song doesn't look all that Christmassy, but it is a Christmas song - he's Australian, you see.  :)

I love that song! Perfect encore to "Ready for This?". (:)

It's just lovely.  I could quote so much of it, but these are a selection of the lines that particularly rang true with me.  Merry Christmas everyone.

Quote
I really like Christmas.  It's sentimental, I know, but I just really like it.

And yes, I have all of the usual objections to consumerism, the commercialisation of an ancient religion.
To the westernisation of a dead Palestinian press-ganged into selling Playstations and beer.
But I still really like it.

I'll be seeing my dad, my brother and sisters, my gran and my mum.
They'll be drinking white wine in the sun.

I'm not expecting big presents.
The old combination of socks, jocks and chocolate is just fine by me.

And you, my baby girl, my jetlagged infant daughter,
You'll be handed round the room like a puppy at a primary school.
And you won't understand but you will learn someday,
That wherever you are and whatever you face,
These are the people who'll make you feel safe in this world,
My sweet blue-eyed girl.

And if, my baby girl when you're twenty-one or thirty-one,
And Christmas comes around and you find yourself nine thousand miles from home,
You'll know what ever comes, your brother and sisters and me and your Mum,
Will be waiting for you in the sun.

Two German Christmas tunes, neither have proper titles, the first one is a "Deutscher" from the Oberdonau the second one a "Sarabande" from the Iglauer Sprachinsel. Both from an old music book called "Die Weihnachtsnachtigal"

Here's my bit - our bit really. Julie sings In the Bleak Midwinter http://soundcloud.com/gmatkin/in-the-bleak-midwinter accompanied by my 1920s Koch in CF.

If you would like to hear the real thing, do come to our session at the Bell & Jorrocks at Frittenden (just South of Maidstone), at 8pm on the 29th December.

Gav

PS - I think I've partly fixed the Soundcloud distortion I was complaining about in an earlier edit of this post by uploading an MP3 with lower amplitude. I'd be interested to know whether anyone else has experienced this problem please?

Gavin, that was just beautiful, thank you! Nice sensitive accompaniment (as always) to Julie's lovely singing. Happy Christmas to the pair of you!

My ThOTM:

I have this song from

http://www.christmascarolmusic.org

I love this song and it's working very well with melodeon. My family made this song their this year Christmas hit.

The tune is "Bereden vag for Herran", and it's from Then Swenska Psalmbooken, 1697
The song is adapted by Charles P.Price (1920).

The film shows a bit of the family's ordinary madness.

Blessed days.

Here's another late one from me; just learned this tune, and I rather like it, so I thought I'd do a recording as a way of fixing it in my mind. It's a Breton carol, called simply Nedeleg ("Christmas", I gather), written by Youenn Gwernig, though whether he wrote the tune as well as the words I don't know.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vASySDFkIRE

I learned it from this album, Noels Celtiques, by L'Ensemble Choral du Bout de Monde, (sound clip here), which is just about the most beautiful Christmas music CD I've *ever* heard. Quite hard to find these days, but very well worth tracking down.

Played on the Hohner Preciosa in Bb/Eb, which makes this tune come out in C minor.

Cheers,

Clive

Thanks  Clive
Its a Slivetta one row four stop in D .  Its a pretty good box for low end money.
I bought it three years ago to start learning  took some lessons from a Irish melodeon player
from Boston Ma.  Pgroff would know him. Nice man and a very good player/ teacher.
He really cares about passing on the traditional music as do the folks at local sessions in my area.
And the people on this site !
Thanks for your support!!
I have learned a couple of tune of the month tunes from this site not that good but something to aim at
keep it going. love hearing the different arrangements - tempo and sound of instruments.

Since I'm shut in with the flu :-[ last few days, it was a good time to record a tune. As a winter theme, I chose Apples in Winter, one reason being that apples are the main economy in the region where I reside. And, they are a great comfort, especially in winter.
Please excuse the fact that I am playing one of the other free reed instruments (concertina)  :|bl. I have also put tracks on with guitar and cittern. Hope you enjoy. Happy New Year to All!.....jwf

A new year and a new theme, but as ever, late contributions are always welcome - add them here.
