Tune of the Month for December 2011: Inna Inna
« on: December 01, 2011, 12:15:24 AM »

Blimey! It finally won!  :D

Ladies and gentlemen, easily the most obscure TOTM winner yet, but a lovely little tune if ever I heard one!

It's a traditional An Dro from Brittany adapted by Yann Fanch Perroches, and here's a link to a lovely version of it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kmy8Jl-7aZA

Yann-Fañch says:

Quote
It’s an adaptation I did of a song by the band « les ours du Scorff », but this song comes from a traditional tune…
Corinne and Denis playing on the video
Not sure of the original name… I call it « Inna inna ! »
East Brittany dialect (Gallo) for : "There is some, there is some !"

I'm sure if we ask very nicely, some kind soul will be along in a bit with an ABC transcription! In the meantime, my thoughts and observations after giving it a quick playthrough yesterday; it'll play on a one row without basses, but fitting basses in is a little more challenging (you'll note the video isn't a lot of help here, since its solution is 'play with a guitarist'). On a D/G, I ended up playing it in the lower register in G (i.e. inside row), though there was a fair amount of row crossing going on to get the chords I wanted. The chords also seem quite ambiguous in that there's *lots* of different sequences that work, and none of them are obviously better than the others. Once you get it going though, it's *lovely*.

Happy days!

Clive

If no-one else gets onto an ABC in the meantime I'll try and work the notes out at the very least this evening

Here's my early attempt. I'm afraid that playing it hasn't won me over to the tune or cured me of my reprehensible musical francophobia! I recorded the vid after dark, hence the weird colours. It's on my Saltarelle L'Elfique with the low register taken out in the right hand as leaving it in was taking too much air with the bellows moving out for ages. The thirds are out on the left hand and I'd say that the D chord is an implied minor rather than major. I kept the tune in C/Am despite my box being D/G. I've no doubt Clive et al will come up with killer versions of this tune but I'm afraid it still doesn't do much for me - soz!  :|bl

An excellent start!
I've detailed some of the variations in an alternate stave in the second line, and added chords based on a compromise between what the guitar was playing and what's possible on a melodeon.

One for the Dino with thirds out, I think.

I kept the tune in C/Am despite my box being D/G.

I plan to do it in that key on a D/G box - but I suppose I should try on a G/C too...

But a lovely sounding arrangement all the same, with the added guitar and mandolin.

Well, I don't know about 'killer version'  :D ...  but this is what came out when I first started messing around it with the other night, a slightly slowed down version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kTZcuT9Nyc

It's played on a Castagnari Giasco I in D/G, yes, with unisonoric basses, but you don't need unisonoric to do most of this stuff here other than the occasional underlying bass chord drone that I hear in it as I play it back now; it can be played on a 8 bass. It's played on the lower register in G mostly, crossing the rows for the Em chords.

For info, and it's impossible to follow on the video because the chord buttons are in places you don't expect, the chords used here are roughly:

A music: G-G-Em-Em-G-G-Em/D-C
B music: C-C-Am-Am-C-C-C/D-Em

Cheers,

Clive

Wow - good attempt!  I think we shoudl call this the 'Charles Atlas' tune though, because the bellows extension looks just like a bullworker!

(please don't kick sand in my face....)   :'(

Still squeezing after all these years.
Mostly on hohners , with a couple of Dinos and a smattering of anglos - and now a Jeffries duet

No, perfectly correct but I must say that when I saw your abc I thought something must be missing - it isn't, the tune is just sparse !

Thanks for the abc Simon

I'm really enjoying this thread, guys, especially your slowed down version, Clive.
I was playing around with it on Friday, I'll put up a vid of me playing it on my d/g (I will change the key from C though) tomorrow afternoon.

Addictive little tune, currently lodged firmly in my ear after watching the videos.
Now need to persuade it to visit the fingers.......
