Ah, I read that as a misprint rather than as an intended 16th note. Calling it a 16th does solve the problem of the beats. I still can't figure out how to play that rhythm against a metronome but perhaps it will come. My old standby of counting "One And A" or as they say around here, "Da, chick, dum", isn't up to it.

To be honest, I think it may be a misprint; it would be a fiendish syncopation and I can't really believe anyone would deliberately write it into a tune. It's probably pure coincidence that the misprints produce a mathematically correct but virtually unplayable bar!

Cheers

If you view that pair of notes as a semiquaver and a quaver (sixteenth and eighth note) it doesn't mathematically add up to a bar of 4/4.

Either make it two quavers (good idea as alternative / variation) or add the A to make it same as beginning of bar. The latter is, if I remember correctly, what's played in  the video linked at top of thread.

Sorry, but it does; reading the notes along and giving each one its value in semiquavers, you get 2+1+1+3+2+1+2+3+1 = 16.

Dang it, you're right! I didn't spot that the fifth note was a quaver.
My apologies  :|bl

No apologies necessary! I'm sure it's a misprint anyway, and the resultant bar is such a dog's breakfast it's not easy to make any kind of sense of it.  Certainly the way it's played in that clip is exactly as you describe, with two similar phrases, so I guess that's the way it's supposed to go.  Either way up, I'm still not keen on it, so I won't be losing sleep over it!

Here's my attempt at this, complete with a seamless edit where I totally cocked up the end, played the last bit again and stitched it together, but also copious fluffed notes elsewehere... I assure it is possible to play this tune on the basses, just not when the camera is on  :Ph   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9kQVPkfltU

Wow!  :o

I know ... I called a taxi !   :D

Couldn't  let a Breton TOTM go by without putting in my two centimes.
I liked Y-F P's jazzing it a bit, and then Joreema's family band's jauntiness, so here is a warts and all improvisation. I've really enjoyed this little tune, definitely into the session repertoire.  http://youtu.be/9ycxRQoWzy4

Wow Jack. I like your jazzing around. You've really captured the spirit of this tune. Love it!

That was lovely. The improvisation made me rethink how to play this tune. Thanks for the inspiration.

Many thanks Doc and Steve. Without your appreciation of my contribution,  I would just be a sad showoff!   A merry Memnoon to you, and to Ollie  and Mr J, too for youtube comments.

Curiously difficult tune for me to get right. I kept hoping it would become smoother as the month wore on, but it never did. However, here it is:

I put my version here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VItRmEiprfo. Each contribution by others changed how I heard this tune, so thanks. This was my first venture away from oom pah base and my fingers are still dizzy.

End of the month folks, but you know the score by now - late contributions are always welcome; just post them here.
