Yes folks, you can't get away from it, certainly not here!  ::) Banish your humbugs and get your best festive spirit out, because we're going to do Christmas *again* (3rd time!), or anything even remotely (and non-Christmas lovers, this is your getout clause) related to the season in even the most tangential way.

Ho ho ho

Yay!  I have been working hard on my rendition of Deck the Halls and it is nearly good enough, I think.  Will have it up by Christmas.

I might post something else later, but first here's "one I prepared earlier". This is the contents of a 6 track CD that Mary and I made as a Christmas card and sent to our friends in 2002. I was planning to post a link to it somewhere on melnet as a general seasonal greeting to all, and it might just as well go here. Produced at home on a 4 track minidisc system, not studio quality at all, but we had fun making it.

All sorts of instruments and voices are involved, but for the purpose of being on-topic there is substantial melodeon content (the Oakwood) in While Shepherds Watched and The Truro Wassail. Some of the others feature my Leics. smallpipes which are rarely heard in public (it's not hard to tell why).

Enjoy!

Seeing as Foul Weather Call failed to make it as TOTM, (much to my disgruntlement) I thought it might be appropriate for the 'Winter' part of this month's theme. Mind you, where I live we've had Foul Weather all flippin' year! Played again on my Saltarelle L'Elfique D/G in D. We used to use it for Schottisches in our band but it didn't seem to pair up too well with the other tune we put it with which is Long Odds. I had enough trouble getting this tune somewhere like, let alone both. I'll 'appen put something a bit more seasonal up soon.

Sheila is out at a singing workshop this morning so I had an hour or so to spare and this popped out:

Short and simple again

Work in progress. Happy with the arrangements, just need to iron out the creases.

Addendum: Also a very rough work in progress, for your interest. When noodling begins to take shape, have started recording them so I could remember what sounded right.  This one is at a very embryonic state so it is a bit Name That Tune at present.

Here's Tumbling Tom, the band I play guitar in, playing Mary's Boy Child. Hugh Taylor (of this parish) is the melodeonist(a?!)

I'm feeling incredibly festive!  Having two Christmasses this year - one at my folks and one with the in-laws at ours.  Also singing in our work carol concert and carolling the hospital wards on Christmas eve.  Perhaps by next year I'll actually be good enough at some carols to play my box there too.  I played Deck the Halls faultlessly last night.  Once.  Now I just need to repeat the feat.  :)

Christmas music is about the only thing I like about Christmas. I'll attempt to put something up soon.

Here's a seasonal song I wrote the words and tune for many moons ago. I've accompanied my singing on the D/G Hohner Pressed Wood. I used to perform the song with guitar but have found it too tricky to mix guitar and melodeon so decided to use just the box and do it in a single take. As you'll see on the YouTube description it incorporates the tune 'Hunsup Through the Wood' both for fills and in full (in G) after the song (which is in D). I can't say I've ever come across the practice of Hunsupping which is supposed to be a Lakeland tradition but it is evidently related to Wassailing, Mumming etc. in that it's an activity that took place at New Year. The tune is from the Furness Tradition Tune Book.  As happened last time I recorded a song, I've ended up with the voice maybe a bit low rather than sitting on top of the melodeon but it was the best I could do in the time I allowed mesel'. If anyone wanted to learn it, that'd be fine and if you need any of the words just ask.
The first verse refers to the fact that cows were meant to kneel down after dark on Christmas eve, tears come their eyes and that they could speak - it was supposed to be bad luck for a human to hear them. The book that inspired the song was 'Folklore and Customs of Rural England' by Margaret Baker first published in the UK in 1974, the year I moved to Cumbria.

Plenty to go at here!!   All played on the Dino Baffetti Special (souped up Binci)

First, Stop the Cavalry by Jona Lewie:

Next, take the tempo down a bit, with In the Bleak Midwinter:

Then the old classic covered by Mike Oldfield, In Dulci Jubilo:

What a lot of non melodeon players wish for - SIlent Night:  (showing the benefits of 4th button start on the G row!)

And, to finish, the old english carol 'The Holly bears a Berry':

Here we go folks, here's a quick and simple shot at a couple of quick and simple carol tunes,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0bk47jyNU0

Jingle Bells and Ding Dong Merrily on High played on my old (first melodeon!) D/G Hohner Pokerwork, with a dash of double tracking added in a couple of not so subtle places.

Cheers,

Clive

PS: I have been playing around with 'Mad World' (a Christmas number one a few years back, so it does count!), but it's clear that time this month isn't going to give me a chance to get it up to snuff... Guy however did a couple of years back... and here's the version he recorded!

Marvellous stuff!

Not a melodeon thing, but something for those who say the only thing they like about Christmas is the songs.  I'm not religious myself, but I love Christmas because it's a time of year you get a bit of extra time off all at the same time to visit your folks.  Did that this weekend just gone, and we went to see a show where Tim Minchin sang this song (accompanied by Professor Brian Cox on the piano, as it happens), and I sat there with a happy tear rolling down my cheek thinking "this song is all about me".  It was a beautiful moment and I wanted to share it.  Perhaps I might arrange it for melodeon for next year, but I'm not sure I'd do it justice.  The title of the song doesn't look all that Christmassy, but it is a Christmas song - he's Australian, you see.  :)
