A Long Stretch!
« on: December 24, 2011, 12:07:40 AM »

No. Despite the thread title, the police have not caught up with me.....well, not yet!

I have been learning a new tune, Scottische från Háverò, that requires a long stretch from a low D near the chin end of the middle row to a high A near the knee end of the outer row on a three row box. More often than not I miss the high A: either I fall short of the button or I overcompensate and go too far. Does anyone have any tips for ensuring that you don't miss the button when a tune requires a long stretch like this?

Practice, practice, practice! I have similar problems with the Autumn Hornpipe - stretch from button 3 to whatever number the very top button on the D row is.

The longest stretch I play is probably in the O'Carollan tune Mr.O'Connor. Watch Jackie Daley do it on YouTube - his face is one of utter concentration, but he has such an easy, relaxed style. I occasionally glance at the fingerboard screws momentarily for guidance. This is the onlytime I EVER look at my fingers whilst playing.

Since converting the Penguin of Death Pokerwork to 4th button start all tunes with accidentals are harder, so the likes of Jiggery Pokerwork is a trial  ;) Mind you would still convert any box of mine to the same set up.

I am not very adventurous with the accidentals, but I had to learn hava nagila for a do. Trouble was I only hit the right accidental button about one in three times. I thought about it too much. now it comes natural even with the stretch to the chinmost button. But eazy peazy, just don't play the tune on the two times you are likely to miss it, play something else. It is known as third time lucky ;D

Hi Owen,

Do you have a spare set I might borrow? Mine are small and insubordinate - they don't always do what I tell them!  ::)

My stubby little pinkies consider anything over an ovtave to be quite a jump!  In manytunes such jmps occur at the beginning of a repeat, so I have to trust to luck and try not to think about it - first aim is usually best, try to think positive.  When I can, I might play an arpeggio ascending to the note, it can then be cut short or extended if I've missed my guess.  Mind you, that's a trick that gets used when I'm not sure where I'm going anyway.  If you're really on the ball, the miss can be turned into an ornament or grace note.
