Tune of the Month for January 2012: Bear Dance
« on: January 01, 2012, 01:55:50 AM »

The people have spoken! This month's tune of the month is Bear Dance, or Berendans, or all manner of other variants.

Due to how it was initially imported into the UK, the standard version played in UK sessions is a simplification of the original, but really, for TOTM, any version whatsoever is welcomed, simplified, anglicised or not.

Courtesy of Lester, here's an ABC:

... and here's a couple of youtube videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lNJB84Gb-4 , or this splendid version (played on 3 instruments simultaneously!) where the tune is closer to the version I'd expect to hear in England, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOfiRgXV9B8

Good luck, and this is a nice simple one which everyone can have a shot at, so let's see lots of contributions this month!

Cheers,

Clive

It is all in the notes, doubtless the simplified English version, but the context only allowed for the rough and ready.

All the best

More time-wasting with youtube...

As I share Ollie's view on Bear Dance, I have been trying to find the beauty of it.  There are hundreds of youtubes from around the world!!! So there must be something wonderful about it I haven't found.  Almost all play the simple version,(often claiming it's a medieval Bransle)  which Clive indicates is a Blowzabella simplification of the original Flemish Tunes.
This version seems to work best to me, when it's given a medieval feel with plenty of drones and dancing. I love the Hungarian version below. So here are my favourite Blowzabella versions, until stamina wore out.

BLOWZABELLA  VERSION

NON-BLOWZABELLA VERSION
My real search was to find a version I liked better.  And I only found these, with a  B flat and F# in the B music.   But these sound LESS medieval to me than the simpler version, as accidentals are more recent, right?  So where can I find the proper Flemish version that pre-dates Blowzabella?  Is this it?

Then there's the Bartok version.  So I think we should all go with this really:

Happy New Year everyone - just got back from a week with the folks and due to me getting a lift down I had to leave the box alone for a week - will get going on this tune now.  I think I've played it at sessions once or twice.

This is a lovely tune!!

The bad news for today is that there are lads in my garden doing the enormous job of fixing the drainage around the house (which in itself is great to get done), which means digging up almost the entire garden, and they just hit an unexpected electricity cable and everything went black.

The good news then is that since I have no electricity I can't work on the trad music magazine I should start with today, instead I can do what isn't dependent on light: start learning to play this tune. It's only the 3rd of the month, and I'm already more or less through the A part. Brilliant!

My goodness, only the 5th of the month, and already some cracking submissions. I'm enjoying them all; it's great to hear so many versions of a tune I too have heard a *lot* of times.

Here's my version of this, and as you'd guess, it's "different". I'm so familiar with this thing, it's hard for me to switch off my 'this is how I play this tune' switch. So, I kept the time signature. And I kept the tune (I know the "simplified Blowzabella" version). I changed the key, to A minor (i.e. played it on a G/C). I double tracked it.
Oh, and I played it on the Streb, using the 'recorder' voice.

Ladies and gentlemen, if you're ever in a session where there's a couple of recorder players kicking about, try starting this tune, slowly. It's magic, really it is.

This, by comparison, is a rather gaudy version:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SdRqueyLmX4

Both recorder voices (and I use the term loosely) are done on the Streb, although my playing technique wasn't up to doing the guitar part using the Streb's guitar sounds. So I used an ipad to do that. And the result is... well, lets just say all it needs is a 'rainy day/thunderstorm' track in the background to complete the new age feel. ::)

Off to learn some mazurkas now... which will be played on a proper box, so to speak - once I've learned one!

Cheers,

Clive
