That was quite a lovely and peaceful tune, Roland. Quite unlike some of the motorways I'm familiar with! Thanks for posting that!  (:)

Here's my  mazurka, my apologies for the stumbles here and there:

I enjoyed Chez Seychelles, a very nice rhythmic and melodic Mazurka, a lovely sound.
Interesting it being used as a dance tune by Cajun bands.

Here is "Mazurka de Lapleau" my first video attempt.

Have gained so much from other TOTM clips and was determined to make a short contribution.

I'm getting quite into this one  :D
Here's another Mazurka. This one is contemporary and was written by my good friend Alessandro Pipino from Italy for his band l'escargot.

La Vecchia Singer or The Old Sewing Machine......

Now I am going skiing  ;)

Motorway Mazurka

That was quite a lovely and peaceful tune, Roland. Quite unlike some of the motorways I'm familiar with! Thanks for posting that!  (:)

Someone told me that Jon Swayne composed this on one of his own recorders, while simultaneously driving the Blowzabella mini-bus down the motorway (with his knees holding the steering wheel).  Hence the name.  What a man!

This is a Polish Mazurka which no doubt has a proper Polish name but is known locally as Lumpy Custard.

Played by me on my Penguin of Death Pokerwork and The Sainted Mrs Bailey on her Dove Silkie Hammer Dulcimer

This seems to be the same tune as Mazurka d'Auvergne which I learned from a Frenchman here in the US.

One is a reworking of a previously posted tune, the other new today. Almost certainly rhythmically adrift from perfect Mazurka but ce la vie.

All the best: Bill

Here's my contribution http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbipYoMelDw. For once I'm several days ahead of the end of month for theme of the month, so I'm off to learn another.

However, here is my version, as a mazurka . . .

Ollie,
I've added your version to my listen over and over list. I especially like the variety you included in the improvisation. Bravo.

Is this a mazurka?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qepqcwJyDZE

It's a lovely tune that I've started playing recently.
You could dance a mazurka to it played a bit slower that that, but despite the way it's often played with a dotted rhythm it's not quite a mazurka, I think because there aren't enough strong second beats.

I've known these for a long time, and played them for a few years too. Dave Roberts wrote the Essex Bazurka to go with the Sussex Mazurka and recorded them on the English Melodeon Players album (Plant Life Records, 1986)

Here they are: http://youtu.be/FH93bYL8WIY

Timing is a bit wonky at the end: I like the way Dave R. slowed up a little near the end, then suddenly speeded up for the last two bars, but I slowed it too early and couldn't be bothered to do another take.

Definitely a Waltz, even without the clue in the title!

Titles can be misleading, Theo  ;D
OK, after my failure to recognise a Mazurka, I'll have a.n.other go.

Agree about misleading titles, the first example that comes to mind would be Michael Turners Waltz,  which was probably written before the waltz was a dance.  It works more naturally as a mazurka IMHO.

Agree about misleading titles, the first example that comes to mind would be Michael Turners Waltz,  which was probably written before the waltz was a dance.  It works more naturally as a mazurka IMHO.

It was written by Mozart, no. 2 in a set of 6 German dances K.536. Each of the dances is a "minuet and trio" - a common pairing of 3/4 tunes in much classical and late baroque music, and the "trio" part of #2 is what's now called Michael Turner's Waltz.

The "trio" in such a pair is often designed to represent a rustic dance (often there are drones implying bagpipes or hurdy gurdies) contrasting, I suppose, with the more aristocratic minuet that precedes it. Wikipedia on Watzes says "The peasants of Bavaria, Tyrol, and Styria began dancing a dance called Walzer, a dance for couples, around 1750". So it's possible that in Mozart's time you could have described those trios as waltzes and people would have understood what you meant: "the waltz became fashionable in Vienna around the 1780s" (Wikipedia again) and K536 was written in 1788.

Having said that, I agree that Michael Turner's does have much of the mazurka about it.
