I'm becoming intrigued enough to look at some mazurka tunes to see to what extent they include the dance feel we've just talked about.  Any suggestions for some really good ones from experienced euro-dancers?

Well not so much a suggestion of a tune, but a suggestion to avoid Irish mazurkas which are really heading in a different direction, as tunes to play rather than tunes to dance to.

I learned to do some Irish set dances over recent years and I thought I had solved the conundrum of the Irish mazurka when I discovered that there is a set dance called the Mazurka Set.  Surprisingly the set contains no mazurkas at all, either in the steps the dancers do or the type of tunes.  Now even more puzzled, but I suppose I just need to be more laid back about a musical culture that can cheerfully include triplets with two, three or four notes!

hi, I'm not an expert ... (I dance only sometimes), but I'm an euro-dancer ;-))
There are so many ways to dance mazurkas ..
But the mazurka we dance in France is mostly the one which is called "mazurka gasconne" (south of France), it has become the standard one in all french folk bals.
So I know this one only, and I confirm that we dance it on 12 beats.
There is something like a "jumping" on beat number 3 and number 9, the video you mention ("how it's done") shows that ...

Wow, thanks for the wealth of info about this from you dancers - there's a heck of a lot to take in here. First impressions:

It is noticeable how much the musicians are concentrating on the dancers.

Also, it looks like the Boombal dancers are doing this the other way round, with the waltz bar first.

The couples' individual dancing styles seem very different, and (dare I say it?), though they are obviously very experienced dancers, many of them don't seem entirely comfortable with the flow.

Something that does come across as a common feature is the importance of a musical 'lift' on the hop step in the mazurka - Steve's 'dup' (or is it:  'laarp-dup-...' ?).

This is great stuff - makes me want to try to write a mazurka tune!  (Maybe it will take a few months though.)

I think the lift in the mazurka is created primarily by a slight lengthening of beat one at the expense of beat two with a slightly emphasized and staccato beat two.  At least that is what it feels like to me.  It's hard to put these things into words.  When I tap my foot to a mazurka I'm tapping on beats one and three.

Here's one from me:

http://youtu.be/RViA2tYMx5U

Learned from the Alexis Korner sunday evening radio show way back in 1977, from a recording of a Seychelles 'Cantilly' orchestra, with lots of differenbt instrumentrs, and simply called 'A Mazoc'.  Sharon Shannon must have listened to the same programme, as she recorded a version of teh same tune.

Enjoy!

Here's a mazurka'd version of Happy Birthday; always confuses people until the usual tune gets tagged on the end.

Here's my go at this month's theme; harder than I thought it would be since there's so many cracking mazurkas out there, and I've found myself learning up 4 of them whether I wanted to or not!

Anyway, here we are with the ones I've got up to recording standard - 2 cracking mazurkas, both written by the late great Stephane Delicq:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fD3cgczce94 - La Discrete, which my fiddle playing friend Mark Prescott played at me a few weeks back and thought we should have a go at. Easier said than done, but here it is. It's a beautiful little tune, and yes, that run down at the end of the A music is as hard as it sounds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mstg3G5nwfI - Les Novis, my 'nemesis' tune, which I've been learning for ... the past 2 years it seems!  :-\ I might have got my head around it now! A word to the wise, and it took me ages to figure this out, *don't* try and play it on a Preciosa or Lilly - that B part is geared around the shape of the hand, and if the keyboard is significantly smaller, it's rather harder than on a full size box!

Both tunes played on the rather splendid 1920's 2 row 12 bass Hohner in G/C.

Cheers,

Clive

I really love mazurkas !
I have made one myself, entitled "Mazurka du Lundi Perdu" for a G/C melodeon : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ka1jfzhWdE&hd=1
Stéphane Delicq is my favorite composer on the subject of mazurkas. I've recorded my interpretation of his mazurka "Nadiejda" on YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cx-E-hHyvk

Clive, if you read this, do you have the score or abc-file from "Les Novis"? I would like to learn that tune. Thanks!

Bravo! You've managed to capture almost the identical tone quality to the YouTube of Stephane Delicq himself playing that tune.

I've tinkered with it, but I'm going to have to learn it properly now...

I find it hard to get the rhythm right with these, especially if there are no dancers. I tend to play far too fast. Here are a couple of simple ones that I can just about manage:
Le conscrit - Mazurka de Pradines. Played on a GC Hohner Morganne

http://soundcloud.com/tuftyabc/le-conscrit-mazurka-de

I like that one ! the rythm is really mazurka-like

A link to Bruno LE TRON's mazurka de Salou :

http://youtu.be/Uiq9xJchFTU

And another mazurka (an italian one, with an extra bar at the end of the second part, don't know how dancers manage that ? But it is the way it has to be played as far as I know) :

http://youtu.be/YXsW6MoMdAM

Both should be a bit better played (I have the feeling I'm short of training !)

There is some very graceful playing in there. Practise will make perfect but I don't think you have too much to worry about!  ;)

Blimey, thank you! Stephane's playing was always something magical for me; there aren't many players I've seen that can play for a whole evening's dancing, solo, and keep a whole audience (including me!) entranced. And then to do it on a 2 row 8 bass too. He was quite the musician.
