As someone just beginning my Melodeon journey here in gorgeous Lincolnshire, I've really loved all the mazurkas played and referenced. It's been great to follow some of the links and to have seen folk dancing to them in different parts of europe, and to hear all the different interpretations of the bear dance posted. Thanks to you all, it's been inspiring and really encouraging. As a beginner I've found the information you've provided extremely accessible and very helpful. Thanks to Daddy Long Les for showing me that it was possible in those cracking video blogs. Thanks to Theo for selling me a great first pokerwork.  Thanks also to Liam for the encouragement and for being willing to accompany me on the trip. I'm really excited about giving it my best shot! Looking forward to the ride and posting something when I've got a few skills under me belt and left and right hands start to converse with each other! (:)

The Theme this month would not be complete IMHO without one of my favourite Mazurkas 'Miss Lindsay Barker' by Andy Cutting and as I have just returned from my Sicilian adventure with a bewildering Castagnari Evo in C/F with Pignol/Milleret layout I thought I would post it as one of my first expeditions with this beautiful instrument...... ;)

Very sensitively played Roland and a wonderful sound. Did you order your box before you went over to Sicily? Don't tell me you bought it off the shelf?

I didn't buy it off the shelf. It is a year old and I found it advertised on a French web site. After pictures and videos I decided to go and collect it. It was a great adventure and I met a couple of very nice people.
For anyone who is interested I also discovered that the name 'Hascy' (my other melodeons) was Massimo Castagnari's nickname when he was young  (:)

Lovely! You have captured the spirit of Stephane Delicq's playing very nicely.

A remarkably accurate copy of his style too: gaps in the rhythm, chords, RH harmonies all there.
It just shows there's not much you can't do on a Pokerwork, and the G/C instrument sounds wonderful.

My contributions to theme of the month. The first three are played on my Italian made D one row. This first tune comes from Italy. It's my version of tune a learnt from a tape I bought in Castelfidardo:

http://www.libtrad.eu/mp3/mazurca.mp3

This next tune I learnt from Bruno Sabalat (Rigadon Sauvage) when we played together in Sisteron:

http://www.libtrad.eu/mp3/Mazurka_d'Auvergne.mp3

This third tune is my take on Michael Turner's Waltz played as a mazurka:

http://www.libtrad.eu/mp3/Michael_Turners.mp3

These next two are played on a du botte (1 1/2 row) instrument made by Giustozzi. This first tune is one of my own. I play it a lot when I'm busking - hence the name:

http://www.libtrad.eu/mp3/La_Strada.mp3

This last tune is my stab at musical fusion. A Polish dance tune from Mexico played on an Italian box.

Yes, good to see you have found your way here Mike.  Don't feel you can only post in the current tune of the month.  All the older ones are still open, and if you would like to share stuff that doesn't fit the monthly choices then you can post any box music you like in the recordings and videos section

A couple more quick stabs at the end of the month, mostly so I could ask people's opinion on this tune - anyone know what it is please?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QEI17RcL9E

Mark and I are recording our difficult second album at the end of this month; this *may* make the cut, albeit in a different form, but I confess I've no idea what the tune is. Learned from the playing of Marinette Bonnert a *long* time ago, and played on the Streb....

... which I had out so I could take a stab at this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BGxwSomrUw

[which if you listen really closely, you'll find is a rather distant relative of...] In Continental Mood, by Andy Cutting. It makes a lovely mazurka actually. Or at least it did, before I tried it on the 'Harmonic Minor' keyboard layout on the Streb.

Cheers,

Clive

Here is a good youtube tutorial on how to dance the mazurka (in English):

I found it on a cool mazurka facebook page  8)

Oh, that is indeed a totally different thing, the dance and the music (sounds a bit like circus music >:E).
At Flemish folk balls nearly everyone dances the mazurka like in my link above (especially, as described in the last few minutes where the mazurka step and the walk step get mixed infinitely to match the music).
