Prototype D/G box from Aaro Luukinen
« on: September 10, 2008, 10:31:24 AM »

Aaro ,  who is a member here, has recently sent me a prototype of a new D/G two row box.  I'm working with Aaro to develop this so its suitable for the style of playing here in the UK, so I'm looking for feedback from as many players as possible.

Anyone who would like to try it is welcome to drop in and have a play.

It is a very nice box.  Walnut case, tipo a mano reeds plays beautifully.

But if it's from Theo will it not be Honer like or is that taring Theo with too larger brush.

Aaro's website is here, I think you'll get a good idea of the quality from the pics and videos on there. As the reeds are Italian tipo a mano or a mano I wouldn't think it will sound too much like a Hohner; casework is individually custom built so I don't think it will be comparable to another maker other than in the quality of the workmanship.

It would be interesting to see the new 'English' style box, perhaps it will become an object of desire with the morris crowd and displace the costalottis. It may even coin its own benchmark phrase:

"What's the action like on that thing then Lester?"
"Flies like an Aaro mate"

???

Its certainly nothing much like a Hohner.

Ian Stevenson tried the first prototype recently, his comment was "Can I buy it please?"

It is still here  and available for test drives.

Theo,
My reference to "Hohner Like" was no reference to the quality of the melodeon, which I have no doubt is top class but to the sound. It was an attempt to see if this was going to be the "Erica Morino" of my dreams.

And no bellows!

Bellows is still a work in progress. Next I make surface treatment,
mechanics parts and reed blocks.

What little I know about Finnish boxes is that that they have an enhanced bass system.  Rather than copy 2+half row English boxes might it not be desirable to have the sixteen basses of a Finnish box to give it a genuine difference feature here in England.  By the look of the picture there's still time to drill a few more holes.

Gateshead is a long way for we southerners, any Youtube clips yet ?

Aaro's boxes are genuinely individually made to order, and I know he is able to make boxes with 18 basses, or any other feature that a buyer might specify.  I've been working with Aaro to help him build a box that will appeal to a reasonably large number of English players,  but that won't stop you specifying something different.

Hi Theo

Can you tell us what might make this box appealing to English players?

I know of quite a few people looking for "another Oakwood" now they've stopped making them, or even something better if that exists...

Cheers

I think the best way to see how suitable these boxes are is to wait for the prototype to appear and give it a try.  I should have it at The EATMT melodeons and More day at Mendlesham in March, and at Whitby Folk Week
