Basic D/G ornaments?
« on: January 23, 2012, 11:30:59 AM »

I'm interested in learning about the basic ornamentation for the D/G (G/C etc) melodeon.

Anyone care to list them, to help out a beginner like me?

Or, any pointers to YouTubes or teaching DVDs where I can see them done.

Even better, a slowed down YouTube from one of our expert members showing the way for the rest of us.

I found John Kirkpatrick's DVD to be very good for this, obviously it helps if you like his style of playing:

http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/303_306_307_360/products_id/3330

The sections on ornaments are included alongside the overall course, starting with the simplest ones.

One I use a lot is a grace note underneath particular notes. It's kinda hard to describe... might do a tutorial video with a few.

ornementations /twidles on DG box are  many and diverse~!

a very effective one is to stop the bass  when a fancy bit of treble is coming up.  This automatically throws the emphasis on the fance bit of melody & eliminates the possibility of spoiling it with mushyness. The trick is to time the stoping & starting of the bass very precisely.

It also helps to get away from the idea that a particular finger must play a particular  button - aany finger for any button leaves 3 fingers (& possibly a thumb!) to add twiddles using other buttons.

as any combination of buttons on the push (on same row) will harmonise & most combinations on the pull harmonise the spare fingers can be used to add right hand chords and/or extra harmonising right hand rhythm. or to add discret gracenotes here & there.Tunes, particulary in the upper echelons of the G row can be 'thickened up' by playing in oactaves using first and little finger

Used sparingly same note 3 finger triplets can be very effective.

The thing about oarnementation is to   experiment & build up a selection of 'building blocks' that can be used  in a veriety of tunes

This forum is the greatest! Thanks to Gypsylad and Lester.

In particular, loved the production on Lester's video. Could you do any more of them?
