Was it a gig or a trade show???  Did you sell many? Did Rees just have them all in his van anyway? Did you wear a blindfold and pick them up randomly? Isn't having that many in one place a public order offence? ;-)

Having aspare box is prudent at a paid gig and anyway, without one where can you put your beer within easy reach?  Doesn't work with a four-stop so a couple of two rows are de rigeur.

Did you wear a blindfold and pick them up randomly?

It sometimes sounded like that....

They were a great music hall speciality turn weren't they?  All of them from the same family and not a one of them over 5' tall. ...... or maybe I'm thinking of something else...

Mine have gone up to three on stage, though at some point a fourth one kept creeping in somehow ...

All you need is Rees's happily decorated Roland FR18D. It can play in any key with almost any sound at the touch of a button. Providing he remembers to put decent batteries in it. Mind you you can also do away with most of the band at the same time! I think you are all paranoid. For ceilidh band work I just take one melodeon after all what is the rest of the band for(good question)? Does the bass guitarist take 9 bass guitars or the saxophonist 9 saxophones-oh they do-then I can see your problem!

It's when I do concert work I panic and pack every melodeon I've got, and the concertina just in case.

Currently on our stage (for five musicians):

five recorders
four melodeons
three saxes
three fiddles
three guitars
one bass
one concertina

That's an average of four instruments each...

P.S. Forgot the three-hole pipe and tabor, triangle, tambourine -- nearly up to five each :-)

I played in a band once where each of us had one instrument, except for the band leader who had:
English concertina
tenor banjo
northumbrian pipes
border pipes
mandolin
bouzouki
recorder
whistle
bandurria
low whistle
appalacian dulcimer

and I hear he now has added:
bass viol
charanga

And a large van??

Indeed.   I used to transport the PA, and when we arrived at a gig his pile of instrument cases was usually bigger the PA that would serve the whole band.   And of course he had to have 3 mic stands, and troublesome microvox pickups on several instruments, so he also hogged about two thirds of the mixing desk and a large proportion of the sound check time and effort!

Ugh...strings are the worst:  I used to lug several guitars, banjos, ukes, mandolins and fiddle to my solo gigs...then I got into squeezy boxes and had to cut back on the strings.  Later, I went for efficiency and performed mainly with banjo and box
