Poll: Tune of the Month for February 2012
« on: January 24, 2012, 11:56:40 PM »

Here we are again folks; 4 more to choose from! (Keeping the same format this month, see how things go)

First up, last month's runner up, Rabbit Stew gets another (last) go - here's a lovely version by our own Joreema on Duet Concertina: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7bHlSQGadM

At Ollie's suggestion, Calum's Road, by Donald Shaw - here's a whistle/guitar version of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbUvPqPmX_w

As nominated by Louise, one of my favourite morris tunes ever, Idbury Hill - loads of versions of this to pick from, but here's one by the splendid Ed Rennie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNEm88ebJUs

... and unless my memory's gone, we haven't tried this one yet, Old Joe Clark; a tune with lots of different versions floating about, but how about this splendidly energetic one from Hector? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqgsNHnTOr0

Happy voting!

Clive it's very unfair to put Rabbit Stew and Idbury Hill in the same poll >:(

I've gone for the Stew yet again , hope you put it in again next month if it only comes second - it's got to win sometime!

Must admit I love Idbury Hill and I won't sulk if it wins. :M

Voted for Rabbit Stew in an attempt to save it from dropping off the list forever.
Idbury Hill would be an easy choice but I've already done it for the "Morris Tunes" theme we had a while ago.

Must admit I love Idbury Hill and I won't sulk if it wins. :M
Well no, neither will I  (:)

Old Joe Clark is normally played in A (there should probably be some clever mode thingy here because the only G in the tune is G not G#) on a D/G box

all played "lefty" with mostly an extra air button, except the Concertinas which I play the conventional way round.

Of course, but I thought most people would still have it from last month  ;)

Might be worth looking at last month poll tread as I seem to remember there was other versions.

Yes. Set key to Amix and you'll get the F# and C# you need in the key signature, and can take out the natural accidentals on the G notes.

...and on a D/G box you play Old Joe Clark mostly on the D row except the lowest two notes of the tune (and sometimes the B as well) on the G row. Tricky on bellows management as it's mostly pull...

Sorry if this has been pointed out already in another topic thread - just an observation about the title of Rabbit Stew: if in fact its original title was Saut du Lapin, that doesn't mean the rabbit was stewed, or even sautéd, it means "rabbit's jump" "or "bunny hop". So it's supposed to sound like a rabbit hopping around, not a rabbit sizzling in a pan.

Having said that, I'm very fond of rabbit as a dish, so I have no problems with the English name.
