I've had a go at some morris tunes!
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:28:59 PM »

Hello all

Back on my sainted C/F pokerwork I thought I'd have a go at some morris tunes. Don't expect to be able to dance to them - I've never played for morris in my life, well a bit for northwest clog nearly forty years ago, I just love them.

They're really great Martin. I think morris tunes acquire a new dimension when played without dancers, purely as music to listen to. Many times I've had to bite my lip when playing morris tunes in a pub session only to be told 'That's the wrong speed - you couldn't dance to that'. But nobody's dancing are they? Grrr!

Beautiful, and quite danceable too I'm sure.
I love the key change in the middle of Shooting - it never occured to me you could do that with that tune.

Oh, that is just lovely playing! I'm sitting here smiling to myself as I listen. It sound quite danceable to me, I don't know what you're apologising for. Some morris sides might like it a bit slower, but the tunes positively invite dancing, the way you play. Well done!

Purely from (possibly faulty) memory - don't they change key in the middle of "Shooting" on "Morris On"?

Lovely indeed, and an interesting case of parallel evolution on Shooting -- the same drone accompaniment I use when playing for the dance (at least, the first 3 times through), and even exactly the same harmony in the run up in the B music (though I play it all an octave lower).

Obviously a product of good musicianship then, not just playing for dancing ;-)

Sounds fantastic.  Listened to that and remembered half the things I was wanting to learn to do on the box.  Inspirational, thank you!

Halloo!

Thank you all for these lovely comments. Maybe I should look for a morris team to play for . . .

A lovely rendition, Martin. Crook Morris would love to dance to a slightly slower version of your rendition of William and Nancy. What a pity you don't live closer to Kendal.  :(
