Tune of the Month for February 2012: Rabbit Stew
« on: February 01, 2012, 12:11:11 AM »

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a clear victory this month for Rabbit Stew, a rather splendid Quebecois tune:

Here's a lovely version by our own Joreema on Duet Concertina: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7bHlSQGadM ; and here's some ABC

Code: [Select]
X: 1
T: Rabbit Stew
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Gmaj
B3A GFGB|dBGB A4|ABcB ABcd|edef e2 d2|
B3A GFGB|dBGB A4|ABcB ABcd|e2 f2 g4:|
|:gdBc d2 ef|gdBc d4|dDDd DDdD |edef e2 d2|
gdBc d2 ef|gdBc d4|dDDd DDdD|e2 f2 g4:|

I can't give any helpful tips on how to play this one yet - still learning it myself. Seems like it will take me a little bit of work to get that dDDd DDdD sequence in the B music crisply!

Cheers,

Clive

Rabbit Stew

Ooo.. this is fun!!! This is me having a first go at the TOTM. I'm playing it in C on a Chinese one row. I've still got some problems with the fingering, but it should shape up well. I like the fact that it works in both octaves on the one row. I'll play it when I'm busking this weekend.

Hello,

As some of us already knows there is a fench canadian name for that reel: le "Saut du Lapin" (litterally: the "rabbits hop").
I think the french name should be le "sauté de lapin": it is a kind of rabbit stew (civet de lapin).

One can hear a live bal version here:

http://www.openbandonline.com/Open_Band/Open_Band_Podcast/Entries/2010/8/13_Saut_du_Lapin_Reel_de_Pointe-au-Pic_La_Belle_Gaspesie.html

I'll try to learn this TOTM at that speed ..

Thought I'd get in quick this month with a rough n' ready version of the Dwatted Wabbit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yEYaeEaV6U&list=UUD52540yRGpJhV3e4P7MTFw&index=1&feature=plcp
Played on my Hohner Pressed Wood D/G with a few harmony notes thrown in for free.

Hello Clive, I'm not totally familiar with ABC notation  :'(
so could you give me some extra knowledge about the right way to play left hand for that tune  :|||:

first line, I can read : gdBC d2 ef  (for first measure I suppose)

Well, should I take it for account that small letters mean chords and big letters mean basses ?
in that way, could it means that I should play it this way :

1st beat : g chords d chords
2nd beat : B bass C bass
3rd beat : d chords d chords
4th beat : e chords f chords

But it sounds a bit odd, doesn't it ?

Sorry to ask such questions, but I hope you will "enlighten" me ... :Ph

If you go to the home page there is a very helpful introduction to abc notation.  I had also not used it until a week ago but it is really very simple and there are a number of websites (and free ware) that will let you translate the abcs into manuscript.

The bonus for me is that it also allows you to notate tunes simply and then print them out beautifully in manuscript!

The abc won't though tell you anything about the left hand basses - this is the tune only!

You have, as they say, got hold of the wrong end of the stick with ABC.

This ABC only has the melody line, no basses.
The notes CDEFGAB are the notes from middle C rising up through the treble clef, once you get to the C in the middle of the treble clef the notes go cdefgab.
The length of the note is assumed to be a quaver but if a note is followed by a 2 it is twice as long so a crotchet.

Oh I see ..
Than you all of you  :|||:

I already knew a site to tranlstate ABC into dots, and I use it, and most of the time I  managed some kind of a way finding basses.

But I thought there was something about left hand on the original ABC document, that strangely did not appear when translated into dots  ??? .

So, when somebody said that it was tricky to get a sequence with plenty of D, I thought he was refering to basses ..
True too that here in my country we use letters (i.e A, B, C etc.) mostly for basses, that's why I was somewhat wrong ..

Regards.
