Oh, YES, it is similar to the Dogtanian tune.

I wish you hadn't said that, though!

Here's my offering:

http://www.onmvoice.com/play.php?a=81553

My version's based mainly on the 'Saut du Lapin' score from the very wonderful 'The Portland Collection' by Susan Songer, incorporating bits I liked out of some of the other versions of 'Rabbit Stew' that have been posted here.  I've also changed a few bits of the tune and put in my own chord accompaniment.

I have written out the score for what I'm trying to play, and would like to post it in pdf and Musescore format, but can't seem to get either file to be accepted.  I'll keep trying.

Convert the PDF into a PNG graphic if you can. (Or email it to me and I'll do it)

These attachments ought to work.  I've done it in pdf for anyone who just wants to read it, and Musescore for anyone who use this program and wants to modify the tune for their own purposes.

Just some comments on the convention we tend to use in our band. (Dunno if this is standard, but we find it useful):

/(F#) would mean: play the previous chord, but add the bass note F#.

And:

C
Abdim

means:  play the chord C first time through, and Ab diminished second time through, alternating.

^ -------  is my mnemonic, which reminds me to play that passage on the pull.  I don't use these symbols all the way through, just on the bits where otherwise I'd go wrong. Of course, if your box has a different design, this may not be possible - it's just for my use with my box.

And Anahata, thanks for the very speedy offer - much appreciated, but with a bit of luck it's worked!

It has worked, and I was going to make some disparaging remarks about obscure file formats and proprietary software, but the name of musescore rang a bell and I found not only that it's free, but I even have a copy of it installed here  :|bl

I've never got to grips with musescore, but it loaded and printed your file just fine.

I still like ABC.

(Temporary minor drift:

Sorry to abc'ers, I tend to use scores mainly.  Anahata, I must admit Musecore really isn't bad, now - a lot of earlier bugs have been removed, and it is very quick and flexible to use, I find.)

Question: is it a reel or a hornpipe? I keen feeling like I sould play it as a dotted hornpipe.

'The Portland Collection' by Susan Songer

That's a new one on me. Thanks for the heads up.

Mike, if you haven't seen it, it really is a cracking book of 200-300 tunes with well-chosen suggested chords, described as 'Contra Dance Music in the Pacific Northwest'.  We found it to be a complete delight, with lots of superb new stuff we'd never heard before, and plenty of info about each tune.  Obviously many of the tunes originate from elsewhere, and it's a great mix of influences, to rival French Canadian music in many ways in terms of sheer musical interest.  The book is superbly presented, with the tunes in alphabetical order, ring bound so that it's easy to perch on a music stand.  Lots of fast reels, obviously, but by no means all the tunes are reels.

A very accurate version. I think you are doing the right thing starting slow and getting it right ..... if only I would take the same advice!

This is mine. Less accurate and rushed. I may have another go later in the month.

Rabbit Stew

Ooo.. this is fun!!! This is me having a first go at the TOTM. I'm playing it in C on a Chinese one row. I've still got some problems with the fingering, but it should shape up well. I like the fact that it works in both octaves on the one row. I'll play it when I'm busking this weekend.
Just catching up - nice one row playing Mike.

Just shows how responsive some cheap Chinese boxes can be :)

I'd say that in most of the versions we hear, it's a schottishe, but it could be played (faster, smoother) as a reel or (dotted, bumpier) as a hornpipe.

There are now two volumes comprising The Portland Collection. I have the original vol.1 and I completely agree with Chris that it is a really good tunebook. One of the best. I ought to get round to acquiring vol.2.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how readily available they are in the UK these days. A quick google search reveals not very much. However, you may be able to order them from Elderly:

http://elderly.com//books/items/463-1.htm
http://elderly.com//books/items/463-2.htm

Edit:
I see that Vol.1 is in fact available from the Music Room at Clecky
http://www.themusicroom-online.co.uk/product_info.php/cPath/303_304_416/products_id/140
(clicking on the link to vol.2 returns an error though. :(
Might be worth giving the MR a call)
