Not to detract from the subject of furry creatures, but am wondering what is the species of this tune. Is it a schottische?  ???

Don't know but I pair it with the Polka Chinoise so kind of guess it's a polka?

Hmmm....both 4/4, but 'Rabbit' seems a bit syncopated for a polka..? Anyway, was considering it for an accordion competition that requires a schottische, wouldn't do if it were a polka  :(

I will definitely post something for this TOTM if the fact that I've spent all day at work humming this is anything to go by!

The version I've been learning doesn't have the high to low D "One for all and all for one, Muskehounds are always ready" in the B section though.

I really do like this tune. Having it finally win was well worth the agony of watching it finish second in the voting not once, but twice. The postings so far have been both enjoyable and instructive.

Many thanks especially to MrJoreema for the kick start his great performance gave to me. Now I have to wonder...how long would it take me to switch over to a McCann Duet? Here's my attempt to follow along on plain ol' two-row:

It very much depends on how you play it. Some here have played it more schottische-like, some polka-like, some hornpipe-like. However, I believe the original is a reel.

Well, I've leaped in with both feet (hands?) and posted at:

My first effort as a beginner at learning tune of the month.  Pretty traumatic playing to camera as I am sure others have found.  I was fine when it was off but as soon as it was recording...! :||:

Rabbit Stew, paired with JK's fantastic tune Pepper in the Brandy, played on my Bb/Eb Erika. :)

Loved it - beautifully flowing and bright.  Thanks

Here's my Rabbit http://youtu.be/xDNC0tkitFE
I still like Mr Joreema's most of all, and especially his descending bass line in the B Music.  So I had to put something like that in.

Edit: 17 Jan
After some respected feedback (Thanks darling :-*) I've trimmed off the slow second part where the rabbit expired rather too slowly.

I have my rabbit dropping off to sleep (or expiring gently, if you prefer more drama). Hope you like.

I like v. much.  And I like the smooth tone of the melodeon.

After forty years of fiddle tunes and never getting around to reading  music several melody recall aids have evolved.I had trouble remembering "Rabbit Stew" so resorted to coming up with lyrics for the A part.

There's a white rabbit who daily comes and goes
Has some pony buddies let him nibble at their toe-ohs
There's a white rabbit who daily comes and goes
He's a clever bunny cause he knows what he knows

Thanks to all for a world of new tunes. When my left hand catches up with my right I'll make a run at ToTM. Todd D

Played Rabbit Stew at ceilidh last night. Worked well for Lady Godiva. Also re ThOTM managed to drop in Italian Schottische for Canadian barn Dance.

Re earlier suggestion pairing Rabbit Stew with Run Rabbit Run. I tried this at gig on Weds went down well with crowd (sm. group of people in back room of pub somewhere north of Newcastle). I had to play both tunes with more of a drop step feel (i.e. Schottische). IMO both tunes were compromised. Back to the drawing board for rabbit set.

Hi Jack....I agree, Mr.Joreema's version is tops, but I like yours quite well enough, and especially the touching tribute to the dearly departed ;D. Here's mine. Not much additional to offer, except for a bit of monkey business....

Loved the rabbits/lapins - now if you can only make them bunny hop while they play you will really be on to a winner....

I had been thinking about a small furry animal inspired st of tunes

Can I suggest Freeland barbour's Rabbitskin Hat? Also two tunes from the American repertoire - That's My Rabbit, My Dog Caught It and Rabbit in the Pea Patch.

Re the above I've tried pairing Rabbit Stew with That's My Rabbit-My Dog Caught it They make a good pair. Also works with Rabbit in the Pea Patch, although the 3 part 40 bar structure makes it a bit awkward.

I found some nice vids online:

N.B. Rabbit in a Pea Patch not to be confused with the Maceo Parker funk workout of the same name:

Found it on JC's tunefinder. Can't vouch for the accuracy, though the midi version sounds right. Nice combo.

Here's my version of this tune; no clever rearrangements this time, just played straight and quick.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf6Zs5u_7pU

One "trick" I have noticed with the tune - that octave D bit in the B music is a *lot* easier to play crisply if you drop the basses for that bar.

Played on my G/C 1920's-ish Hohner.

Cheers,

Clive
