Nice "Siebenschritt" melody

"Sette passi" Italy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HUh0Ccwcxs

I cross checked with my copy of the Smithsonian Folkways collection "Folk Dances of Austria, Vol. 1" on which Karl Kubat (and orch.) play "Der Siebenschritt". It is indeed the same melody. I don't know what it means, but it's intriguing.

Here's a new schottische http://youtu.be/FduniJt_XEo  It started as a version of my Marigolds waltz, but greatly influenced by a  swung schottische on the Red Dog Green Dog CD.   Played with bandoneon voicing  (ML) and without the low basses. Still trying to find a good name  (not Purple Pup, not Goldie -- too many other Goldies in the media)
Do tell me if it resembles a tune you already know.
So here's a new challenge.  For theme of the month.... to  post a  newly composed tune in that theme!
Fabulous tune Jack. Doesn't sound like anything I've heard before. Really like the sound of your Loffet too - not too sad at all. Though most of us melnetters probably are a bit sad.

Some more from me, some well known, and some lesser known - all nice and short!

First off is the Rigs of Marlow:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woHlXAODkBc

Then a rare one - I think it came from the Ramsbothams, the great Derby dance band. Please enlighten me if you know what it's called!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-a6dxEFAlv4

Another not so common one, this time in D -  I wish I could remember the names of tunes...... This rolls along nicely, and is a great session tune.

Then a well known one - Click go the Shears:

Enjoy!

Re: Theme of the Month for February 2012: Schottisches - La Calantha
« Reply #64 on: February 13, 2012, 04:23:56 PM »

Here's a Schottische that is very obscure one, that you don't hear very often. A cracking and very different tune called 'La Calantha' - from my mate Steve Thompson, with plenty of deliberate accidentals!:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0saBL7RdpcE

And in case you ask, no, I didn't learn it from the Posh Band , CD or live. I acquired it long before the band even existed!

I searched folktunefinder.com for Schottische and Scottish and this caught my eye, so I learned it and it's met with the local session's approval...

I know this one as a 6/8 tune called either Hunting The Hare or Bartholomew Fair.  Makes a nice schottische though - I think I might prefer it like this.....

Once it finishes uploading, here's a couple of schottisches from me:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVH5oAJt44Y

Is it just me, or have we had relatively few french-style schottisches this month? Well, here we have two - Martin Keates (of Jabadaw)'s wonderful (but very unimaginatively named) Schottische No.1, paired with Dominique Forges' classic Sansonnet. I freely admit to having nicked the wonderful bass line in the A music of Sansonnet from an Andy Cutting workshop a *long* time ago.

Played on my 1930's(ish) C/F Hohner Club I, which puts both tunes in D minor.

Cheers,

Clive

I don't know. Here's a couple more. I restrained myself at first because I thought someone would jump on these as they are well known in England, but maybe not as much as I thought.

Anahata is correct: the second tune is definitely Scottish à Catineaux. Scottish de Servant is quite a different tune, though equally good. Check out both of them on the excellent Jean Blanchard CD [img]Accordéon Diatonique.

First attempt at doing the video recording/YouTube stuff using iMovie on my recently acquired iPad.

Two schottisches picked up (learnt?) in Katie Howson workshops in Wem and Witney. The first is Vicente Santez' Chotis from Albuquerque, New Mexico, the second is Sustead Schottische from East Anglia.

Good stuff, Andy!
I notice from your video that the bass end of your box is doing a lot of pivoting about a mid-point axis. I respectfully suggest that this is rather inefficient, as a lot of energy is spent waggling the bass end about that axis, rather than pushing/pulling air through the reeds. Perhaps you could make a conscious effort to convert the waggling into more of a push-pull movement parallel to the bellows axis. I feel that you would then get a cleaner response from the reeds. Hope you don't mind me mentioning it...

Thanks Steve, I noticed the same thing last night when playing back that video.
I have never watched myself playing before, and I guess its a bad habit which has probably been there for decades!
Be interesting to see whether it is the same when I play my pokerwork or other two-rows.

I guess that type of useful visual feedback explains why lots of different professions use video as a training aid!

Wow, that is a lifetime error fixed.  I went back and checked every source I have, and they all agree with you.  I can't even remember when I first made that slip, but it's stuck for a long time.  Thanks!
