Theme of the Month for February 2012: Schottisches
« on: February 01, 2012, 12:16:35 AM »

Well, I thought the mazurka theme went splendidly last month, so let's try another similar theme this month! We'll try to do Schottishes here of any persuasion; doesn't really matter what tradition they're from, any schottische will do just fine thank you very much.

There's lots of cracking schottisches out there, new and old, but if you haven't heard any before, you'll find a couple in the depths of previous tune of the months; the Canal in October and Mominette (also known as Schottische a Bethanie or the New French Schottische) are great examples.

Good luck and let's see if we can get even more contributions than last month!

Clive

I have been playing these a lot since I head them on an old Alain Pennec recording.

Braes of Tulimet

I don't get chance to play enough schottisches. This first one is from Kerr's. I think the notated key is Em. I'm playing this on a Chinese one row in C so it comes out in Dm.

Me too - my dream way back in the early days of the Old Swan Band was to cut an album entitled 'No jigs or polkas' , with just Schottiches on it!   ;D

Okay, Tufty, I don't mean to always be riding your coat tails, but here's my version of that:

Two more recordings.

Brochan Lom

Brochan Lom (aka Orange and Blue) reminds me of my dad. He would whistle this and dance a rant step while washing up.

Schottische Set

  • Kafoozalum
  • Old Mrs Huddledee
  • Keel Row

I can't remember a time when I did not play these tunes. This is great busking set.

The Brig O' Perth

I was gonna put this up yesterday, but when I listened it was crap, so I recorded it again. I'm playing this on the Chinese one row, so it's in G mixolydian.

I love that set ! I've played it for as long as I can remember as well - It's ideal for 'Strip the Willow', speeding up over time  :||: We play it in reverse order though.

We played this for a twin town dance last July. One of the visiting Germans slipped. We had to mop the blood from the floor. Later a woman fell down stairs. We got a re-booking at Christmas!

Super stuff this. I could listen for hours! Is 'Old Mrs Huddledee' known by a different name? The tune is very familiar but the name means nothing.

That's funny, I also know these tunes, in the same order, and presumably from the same origins, but by these different names:  Nae Luck about the House, Kafoozalum, Keel Row.  Used for 'Thady You Gander'?

In these parts, that tune (Old Mrs Huddledee) is known as "Katie Bairdie".

Chris is right. I got the names wrong. The first tune is "There's Nae Luck Aboot The House", the second tune is "Kafoozalum" or "Old Mrs Huddledee" and the final tune is "Weel May The Keel Row".

The Mrs Huddledee name comes from the rhyme:

Old Mrs Huddledee,
come to bed to cuddle me.
Cock your leg right over me,
to keep your belly warm.

The Kafoozalum name comes from a popular 19thC song. It also crops up in the rugby song repertoire as "Hi, ho, Kafuzalem, Harlot of Jerusalem".

Not sure that first tune in the second set is Kafoozalum - sounds more like Washing Day to me, which I know as the tune to an Adderbury Morris dance. Still, fantastic playing, really enjoyed that.  (:)

Here are plenty to listen to.
First off is a cracking tune from Frank Weatherill of Muker in the Yorkshire Dales, collected by Bob Pegg - I got it from Steve Thompson. It's named after a traditional dish that is made from Beestins, the very thick and creamy milk a cow produces straight after calving. It's called  Beestin Pudding (with legs on).....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae7yXNOZy8I

Second is a tune learned from Gabi Scurfield when we were in the Golden Ball Syncopators in 1977. It's from Alsace-Lorraine, it appears in the film Cabaret, and I've heard it played on bouzoukis in a Greek restaurant in St. Albans! The title, Mums Schottische,  is because Gabi was a new mum at the time, and couldn't remember what is was called...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68V-oBoUrII&feature=related

We usually follow it in a set with this one, Harvest Moon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrm3hjdA4XQ&feature=related

Then my all time favourite Schottische,  the Indian Queen:

http://youtu.be/LouGC8UJm3k

Followed by a french one  - I don't know what it's called!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01RHdSTFMik

And finishing off with a cracking Scottish one - I wish I knew what it was called!

Thanks pikey. Lovely playing. I think I had the Frank Weatherill tune from Steve Thompson as well. I've a recipe for Yorkshire Curd Tart from an old copy of Farmers Weekly that uses beastings to make the curd.
