Another rendering of Nigel Eaton's Halsway Schottische...

http://youtu.be/uEiGvUNNZhQ

A few days ago Simon Haines sent me the music attached to an email saying he'd fallen in love with the tune and wanted to encourage as many people as possible to play it (I'm sure Roland was in on this too), so I took the challenge of learning it before the month was up and here it is. Another month of work and it might sound quite good...

Very very very good  ;)

My interpretation of Stony Steiner's 2 SKINT Scottisches (or Scottishes as he spells it) -  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNHZkNRdKpI

I learned these from Stony's YouTube video (Nov 2009) where he plays them in C and Am, on what I assume is a GC melodeon, but as I only have a DG melodeon I have transposed them to D and Bm (although I will use these tunes as part of my justification for getting an AD melodeon one day  (:)).

Schottische a Vermaux and Mominette - two schottisches that are already well represented but I wanted to try them on my CF Liliput: http://youtu.be/PkBUU2rKKWE

Some great recordings again this month folks; well done all! Here is a ridiculously late entry, sneaked in when I found myself playing it tonight and thought that if I didn't record them now, I never would! So here we are,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aa9hcQdxagc - Peter's Schottische / La Gloire de Mon Pere

Peter's Schottische is by Mr Toby Dog himself, Tim Van Eyken, and came up at one of his Witney workshops I believe. I wasn't there, but when I sought out this tune off one of Tim's recordings shortly afterwards, I rather fell in love with it. It's a cracker. La Gloire de Mon Pere is by Nigel Eaton, and features on his Pandemonium CD I think. Nigel writes some fantastic tunes, many of which are now classics. This schottische is one that works great on the box, though if you want to try it it's in Mixolydian mode, so you play it on the G row in D (on a D/G) if that makes sense.

Played on the 12 Bass Bb/Eb Hohner Preciosa.

Cheers,

Clive

End of the month folks, and a new theme beckons. Late schottisches as ever are always welcome here; just stick them on this thread!

Peter's Schottische / La Gloire de Mon Pere

Clive, I love your playing and you always do something (very) interesting with the tunes you play but the latency in the videos makes it impossible for me to even start to try and figure out what you're doing! Is your video camera steam powered or summat?   >:E

Ah yes, guilty as charged! Actually, I do believe my webcam *is* steampowered! The main problem is light; my webcam records in poor light, but the worse the light, the more blurry. And since I inevitably record at night, it's not a good outcome. In fact, I record the sound and the video separately and then join them together by eye/ear, so they are (when they leave my PC for youtube anyway) synced together - often quite a challenge, but usually I use the basses to figure out when I'm sync; treble movement is so hard to spot, it's virtually impossible to sync them together using that. So a combination of low light, blurry video, minimal movement of my treble fingers, and lets be honest, a spectacularly rubbish webcam, is working against you. I really should replace my webcam, but I don't know what would be significantly better...

Clive, I use a similar method to you to record for YouTube. I record the sound on an Olympus digital sound recorder and the visuals on my 'normal' camera which is a Panasonic DMC-TZ6 and which is a fab little digital camera for taking normal photos. It will record video in low-ish light but I must admit when I've recorded at night everything, including me, looks rather orange - probably not helped by the orange blinds we have in my room. In other words, to put it bluntly, almost any modern-ish camera will probably produce less blurry pics than your webcam. ;) Before I get set upon by the techies I freely admit to being a complete amateur with regards to recording/computers etc. ;D
BTW, your latest schottisches are fabulously played and most enjoyable (as always)! :||:

Better late than never, right?

Here is a tune that I learned from fiddlers in Austria, who called it "Swedisch-Schottisch."  I haven't played it in years but after a few times through, the muscle memory recaptured it!

Amazing how this theme has overrun - schottisches are popular!

That one seems to be called Schottisch från Idre, by the way.

Gary, nice playing, I love this tune too - I know it as 'Plant un Chou', and I think I got it from one of the 'On Bouge' tunebooks.  I remember someone teaching it at a workshop some years ago (sorry, I forget who), and saying that the C music is great if you ever want to confuse other musicians at sessions who haven't heard it before!

Thank you, Chris.  Gentiane calls it Plant un Cao, Ad Vielle calls it Plant a cao.  What are prepositions between friends?  It must be in one of my tune books, somewhere, but can't remember which.
