Photo Op

I want to post a photo I took in Amsterdam at the weekend, but it's too big. How do I shrink it please?  ???

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

I don't know what software you have, but if it's Windows of any flavour you have Windows Paint or Paintbrush included, which I'm pretty sure is capable of resizing a .JPG file. Aim for about 800pixels maximum width or 600pixels maximum height and you should have  a respectable sized picture that will fit on any screen and the file size should be OK. If you are offered a Quality or compression setting when saving the file, 85% usually gives a good compromise of quality vs. file size.

PS The GIMP is a great free programme for doing lots more with pictures, but it's not worth installing just to resize one picture.

On Linux I have the option of Image Magick which is amazing for doing script driven processing on batches of files:

~$ mogrify -resize 800x800 myfile.jpg

And on a Mac, I'm sure all you have to do is look at the picture and imagine it smaller, and the telepathy module will read your thoughts...

I know with my e-mail software, if you right-click on the jpg file and select Send To/Mail Recipient, then it will offer you size options. Choose the one you want, press OK and then copy the reduced-size file that has appeared as an attachment in a new e-mail box. Paste the copy to your desktop then pick-up from there with the melnet Reply tools.

Chris if you have Microdaft Office Suite installed you in all likelihood have a programme called Picture Manager also installed. Right click on the image file, and select the 'open with' option and then choose Picture Manager. Once in there you go to' edit', then 'compress' and fiddle which you're really good at :) to your satisfaction. Hope this helps?

If you have a mac then iPhoto allows you to export an image with several options for reducing file size.

Yes, it's brilliant! I recently upgraded my Mac and now I don't even have to use a keyboard to type, the telepathy module (I believe its official title is 'Advanced Pioneering Predictive Language and Editing') does it all. Even my scanner seems redundant now. I just have to look at a photo and hey presto, there it is in iPhoto, ready for use. If I need a higher resolution, I look at the photo through a magnifying glass.

Assuming you're uploading from your computer, you need to click additional options (below), then attach the file. Note the size limits.

Or use convert instead of mogrify if you wish to leave the original file intact.

For Windows I use VSO Image Resizer (now available as Light Image Resizer). It's very good for resizing batches of pictures but perhaps a bit of a steep learning curve to change just one. But it is free.

If for some reason you insist on using Windows: ImageMagick should work on that as well.
