More irritating conversation about melodeon terminology
« on: February 04, 2012, 07:59:23 AM »

Tonight I found a blog where the writer uses a term, hitherto unknown, for describing that troublesome board dividing our world from the mysterious inner sanctum of reed blocks and air.

"Deck."

You know, I like that.  :|glug

Things shaped a bit like shoes often get called that (think engineering, or cards, or...) -- which would make pallets "deck shoes" :-)

Or, since they are frequently made of wood - "deck clogs",  it certainly sounds as if Hohner put clogs in there. ;D

In Ships terminoligy, a Deck, is the floor. You also get a Deckhead. Which is the ceiling. You can get a Fore Deck and Aft Deck. I.e. Front and back. Makes sence to me.  :|glug

Well now that's sorted, and just so we're all on the same page, I've created a graphic for handy reference. I suppose the reed blocks might be called the magazines, to distinguish them from reed plates, which are better off called casings. And please, no more of this "treble end" and "bass end" nonsense, terms which sound more like neighborhoods. Let's call them the fore and aft ends of the melodeon.  :|glug

Love it! Please label the pallets with their proper term, "sails." (The levers are "masts," of course.)

..which would make pallets "deck shoes" ..

is that where we would find the 'soul' of the melodeon.

I like the idea of my box having a 'prow' and a 'stern'.

Sort of - the cockpit and cabin have a sole to walk on and the ceiling is the lining of the hull (sides)!  Now if you want to get onto the semantics of which is the hawse pipe and which the navel pipe...  Which probably explains why one so often hears a scream across the water, "just pull the bloody string!"

The definition of a coarse sailor is one who in a moment of absolute crisis, forgets all nautical terminology and yells "for god's sake turn left!"

The bellows would presumably be the waist.

How related to the melodeon is HMS Troutbridge?  :-*

I'm a Yorkie!
My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

The way I play? First cousin!

Lovely tune, though, The Tradewind Hornpipe.
