LEFT HAND D/G 2-ROW CHORD CHART AVAILABLE HERE
« on: February 09, 2012, 06:06:17 PM »

Hi, all on MelNet.

I recently started playing the D/G melodeon and was looking around for a good chart that showed how to play different/unusual left hand chords. I couldn't find one so I spent an instructive few hours on the computer with my Pokerwork and an article ‘Basses on a G/D’ by Norris Winstone, from ED & S Spring 1996, a photocopy of which had been given to me when I bought my melodeon. Many experienced player will already be au fait with the left hand possibilities but I wanted a chart I could refer to in a session if I wanted a particular chord. On-the-fly music theory with a pint in my hand and one in my belly is not my strong point, generally.

I've attached the PDF and hope it is of use to others, please feel free to distribute & copy. Please ensure you credit Norris Winstone who did the work here, all I've done is make a graphical layout.

I'm sure there will be errors (or at least differences of opinion about the chords formed!) please PM me with these through the forum and I will edit/add them to the original. Note that these chords will only work on an 8 bass D/G melodeon, and possibly not all of those, even. This is based on a Hohner Pokerwork.

Hi Baw,
welcome to Melnet!
That's a really useful thing to put up, am currently wondering what a D7 and Gsus 4 is, so that's perfectly answered my question.
Good first post!
cheers

I think I'm starting to get most of the notes in roughly the right order...... sometimes!

Thankyou Baw. Good to have a name for the combinations found by accident, and suggestions for new ones.
Now would someone do a similar format for a typical 12 Bass?   Or is there one already available?

There is also a pull C9 which I don't see on your chart (C chord plus D bass)

Great thanks, really useful! There's so many more possibilities in this instrument than I could ever imagine! Going to have a fun time on the basses tonight...

That's very useful.  I play many of these, but had no idea what they are called!

To me the chart is upside-down, but I understand why you've drawn it that way.

Dear Moderators,

I propose that copies of these two very handy diagrams be "promoted" to the Information - Chords segment of the front page.

That seems like a good idea.  Could you first add the Pull F9, and if you could add the equivalent pull C9 to the DG chart that would be very helpful.   It is good to know when some of the chords are available in both directions.

This thread persuaded me to try a sketch not using basses. No Bass Oblige. Sheet music can be found on the playandteach tune book thread.
Thanks for the effort to make these resources.

Thirded - great resource. I could well be found sitting on a rock on Sidmouth beach next week practicing them all (and cursing my weak fourth finger!).

I wonder if Lester would consider adding this this to his, very useful, chord chart book, if someone asked him nicely (offered beer)?

Edited to say I just realised this is an old post. The suggestion still stands, though.
