Tralee Gaol
« on: February 11, 2012, 03:11:20 PM »

I was just learning this tune (from Mally's book) and was wondering how to pronounce "tralee gaol"?

Found this interesting link, but I guess most of you folks on the other side of the Pond already know this stuff.

Anyway, for those who don't:

Still not sure: Tray-lee or Traw-lee or Trah-lee or ??

Hi,
Tralee is pronounced as trahlee. Like the great old tune 'The Rose of Tralee' At least I've heard people from Ireland pronounce it like that. Gaol is jail.

I've often wondered about the etymology of "gaol". Does any one know why we use this odd spelling?

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.

Etymology
From Middle English gayole, gaylle, gaille, gayle, gaile, via Old French gaiole, gayolle, gaole, from Medieval Latin gabiola, for *caveola, a diminutive of Latin cavea (“cavity, coop, cage”).

I've also got it as "Tralee Jane".
