Surrey beginner, advice needed
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:07:01 PM »

Hi all,

Well, I've been lurking on these forums for a little while but you all seem such a friendly bunch and very helpful with beginner questions that I thought I would take the plunge and say hi.  I've been wittering on about wanting to learn to play D/G melodeon for so long that it is time to stop procrastinating and go for it.

Basically I would like to know if there is anyone providing tuition reasonably local to me.  I am in the north Surrey/Mole Valley area.

Hope someone will be able to point me in the right direction :-)

Thanks

Good luck and welcome to the forum. I don't know your area to suggest anyone, but I can't disapprove of your choice of D/G ;D

Hi Nell,

Have just sent you a pm - not sure I'm up to providing tuition, but my parents are local to you, so happy to visit and help you muddle through the basics! :) Can't think of any other players local to you off the top of my head, but would be interested to know if there are some...

There is a guy who I think runs Dorking folk club who is a box player and he's mainly English music so could be D/G and he may teach. (he used to work at Hobgoblin at Crawley)

here's the website -

he's Neil and there's a contact number might be worth a ring

I'm in Wimbledon SW19.
At the monthly Hand in Hand session here (http://www.greensleevesmorris.org.uk/html/music_sessions.html) there are usually three or four D/G melodeon players.

If you should contact Niel, don't be surprised by his sense of humour!  Quite dry - but while I remember him teasing me when I went to buy my first box, he understood that I wanted to hear the three boxes I found pleasant to play and despite having recently injured his shoulder he played each of them to me and commented on what he thought of each of them.  A very good player and articulate about what he is doing.

Rob.

P.S. it must have grieved him when I eventually chose a second-hand box that wasn't in my original selection!
