Zwiefacher in ABC
« on: February 20, 2012, 07:56:27 AM »

Not sure If I'm in the right department. I've been messing around with ABC editors over the weekend and tried to transcribe a tune with changing rhythms. The Pdf looks good but some of the ABC editors don't create a correct Midi
As its such a nice tune I thought I'd share it with you and I'd appreciate any comments on the ABC notation.

Your ABC Renders perfectly here with abcm2ps -> ps2pdf.
I don't use MIDI and can't test that.
I hope ABC to MIDI converters don't get upset by changes in time signature. That would be very limiting.

There is something odd here. I've had a play around with the abc, including putting the meter changes in line and using a compound time signature.

Code: [Select]
X:1
T:Hobla mr d'Spae
C:Zwiefacher Trad. aus Wurttemberg,Germany
M:3+3+2+2/4
L:1/8
K:G
|:G3 A Bc B3 B AB c2A2 d4|G3 A Bc B4d2 A2B2 G4:|
|:Bdd2B2 Acc2A2 G2B2 A4|Bdd2B2 c2c2ce d2F2 G4:|

In each instance abc notation is displayed correctly and also plays correctly. However exporting to midi has a very low success rate. Any attempt to convert midi back to abc fails completely.

I would suggest posting something to the abc users group;

Success!!

I exported this abc without error messages.

Melody displays with correct meter changes using MIDI software (Anvil Studio).

I was also able to convert midi back to abc which displayed correctly using abc software (ABCexplorer).

As a further test I was able to open MIDI file using MuseScore and export melody as musicXML and in Lilypond format.

Nice tune, Louise!

A couple of points...
In the header, before the tune coding starts properly, the final field should be the Key field in this case K:G. Nothing else should come after that, only the tune code. ABC syntax requires this, although it is possible to get away without it depending on your ABC software.  The initial time signature M:3/4 should come before the K: field.

It is also good ABC practice to embed further time signature changes in square brackets. This allows you to close up the lines of coding and remove the \ line breaks.

As it stands your coding works OK with Barfly for Mac, but I think the following coding is better:
Code: [Select]
X:1
T:Hobla mr d'Spae
C:Zwiefacher Trad. aus Wurttemberg,Germany
L:1/8
M:3/4
K:G
"G"G2>A2 Bc | B2>B2 AB |[M:2/4] "D" c2A2 | "G"d4 |[M:3/4] G2>A2 Bc | B4d2 |[M:2/4] "D"A2B2 | "G"G4 :|
[M:3/4] "G"Bdd2B2 | "D"Acc2A2 |[M:2/4] "G"G2B2 |"D"A4 |[M:3/4] "G"Bdd2B2 | "C"c2c2ce|[M:2/4] "D"d2F2 | "G"G4:|

I also had no problem converting it to midi format using Barfly. But haven't tried the back conversion. It's not something Barfly does, nor I use.

Good point about header order - I didn't spot that!

Also I think ABC versions differ in whether embedded meter changes should be on a new line or can be enclosed in square brackets in the line.

thanks for the tips, this was the second tune that I tried in ABC so I was pleased it worked. I think the signature in square boxes looks much better.

@ nemethmik

I don't think 5/4 would apply as it's two 3/4 bars followed by two 2/4 bars. Also not all Zwiefacher are regular some change their signiture in a way that seems to be completely irregular
