Poll: Tune of the Month for March 2012
« on: February 22, 2012, 12:35:02 AM »

Is it time to do another poll folks? Well, here we go -

Idbury Hill - How on earth didn't this win last month? Let's give it another go! There's loads of versions of this to pick from, but here's one by the splendid Ed Rennie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNEm88ebJUs

In fact, let's take *all* this month's nominations from Ed's collection of youtube videos; it's so comprehensive, it's a veritable tune book! There's some crackers there like this:

Enrico - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeL-qKVx0aQ - an English hornpipe that fits a one-row beautifully. Is it really the same tune as Jacob? I thought they were different somehow. Hmmm...

Mrs Grace Bowie - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNFp8CdGVq0 - a lovely Scottish jig learned from Adam Rennie, though I'm not sure if Adam wrote it or collected it - perhaps someone could enlighten me? Not a tune I'd heard before, but it has instant appeal.

Suki Yaki - this month's slightly off the wall suggestion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpCVjdTElt8 - a tune from the playing of jazz band maestro Kenny Ball, and originally written by Hachidai Nakamura from China apparently. What a great tune, and it fits on a 2 row beautifully (or at least Ed makes it look like it does!)

Happy voting!

Clive

Nice choice of tunes, I've gone for Idbury as I suggested it but I do like Enrico so I hope it gets a second chance (even if it doesn't come in second)

Two  things strike me from these videos.  Firstly, Ed clearly doesn't subscribe to cult of personality.  Secondly, in each case he appears to be playing whilst sitting in a large cardboard box.  Maybe that gives me a clue as to where I have been going wrong....

Blimey, Lester, you've excelled yourself this time. I was just about to post asking for ABCs of Suki Yaki; I hit reply, and was notified that you'd already done it!  :D

Started off with the first page from a sheet music site that wanted $4.99 for the rest so worked it out with a little help from Ed's YouTube (do people not move their fingers very much and play on C/F boxes just to make it harder  ;) )

Mrs Grace Bowie - I wonder how many of us first came across this care of the New Victory Band on their 1978 album One More Dance and Then - http://www.mustrad.org.uk/reviews/victory.htm

I think you meant:
FED B2A|G3 G2||DB,C D2G|B2B B3|B^AB c2B|A3 E2G|1F2F E2D|

Also, I'm sure I know that by a different name, or a very similar tune.

Oh - that is where I know it from, but for some reason didn't recognise the name. As you were, chaps and chapesses...  :|bl

Looks like Idbury Hill will win it, so I've gone for some tactical voting in the hope it'll keep Enrico up there for another go next month...

Enrico was a close second choice for me so I very much hope it gets another go next month.
