I agree with you, Theo, about To the Edges probably having been written in A mixolydian, although it is not entirely clear because there are no C naturals or C sharps in the main tune. However, I did notice a C# accompanying the A natural in the second bar of the C music when Andy played it with some embellishments, which suggests A mixolydian.

When I began transcribing the tune, I referred to an earlier transcription in Am Dorian by Luca Celano that was included in another melnet thread and I wrote 'Am Dorian' at the top of my transcription because LC's version had only one sharp. However, after discovering several differences between LC's version and the one played by Andy at Witney, I discarded it and produced my own transcription from the recording. This was written with two sharps, as was Dave Townsend's aberrant version in 3/2 time. I meant to change the heading to 'A Mixolydian', but I forgot. Sorry!

Surely the tune is just in D? Just because it doesn't have any C#s doesn't mean it's in a mode. The tonal centre is definitely D. The chords, although often played over a D, are D, A (which of course includes a C#, so there are C#s in the harmony, if not the melody), G, Bm and Em, which are chords I, V, IV, vi and ii of D major, respectively. If it were in A mixolydian, like The Athol Highlanders), then the tonal centre would be A, but this tune is very definitely in D.

I assumed the tune was in A mainly because it begins on an A and finishes on one. I know that, as I have written it out, it finishes on a G, but that is because the G leads into an A as it returns to the start. The last time through it resolves on a final A. However, I would not claim to be an expert on keys and modes, so I will leave further discussion of such matters to those more knowledgeable than I am.
