Here's my take on this tune, where I've rearranged it as (mostly) a slow jig - there's a few bars of 4/4 stuck in there too for variety. Can you spot them?

Played once again on the Bb/Eb 12 bass Hohner Preciosa which certainly seems to be my box of choice at the moment!

Enjoy,

Clive

Mesmerizing is the word - very enjoyable listening!

Dear Clive,

I like it the way You play it and the lovely sound of this melodeon.

Thanks very much! The sound is due in no small part to the skills of Mike Rowbotham and Theo who reconstructed the box for me (half each!), and Martyn White also of this parish who did a bit of tune up on some of the reeds which had slipped a bit recently.

Cheers,

Clive

It wasn't intended to sound French so I wonder what makes it give that impression.
The thirds are out in the bass (so I can use B as B minor).
I play all in the same direction for the run down in the A music (to match the B bass).
I play all in the same direction in bar 4 of the B music using the E reversal on the half row.
It's a French box! but it's in D/G.

Inspired by Clive's "alternative meter" idea, I tried it as a mazurka, then as the original morris tune.

PS
I recorded the sound on my Edirol R-09 this time, instead of with proper mics and PC, but the Edirol was set to 128k MP3 which doesn't really do justice to it, and the sound's certainly a lot rougher than usual because of that.
(a little echo added with Audacity too, not the the higher quality reverb I usually use). I'll try the Edirol in 16/44.1 .WAV mode next time...

Here's my take on the TOTM, played on the Hohner Corona GCF. The tune has a strong identity. It's difficult to find much by way of melodic development that adds to this. I experimented at first with trying to take things away. I found it worked well when I moved away from using an obvious strident rhythmic accompaniment, allowing the rhythm to develop over time. I sat at the piano late last night and wrote this arrangement. When I tried it on the accordeon this morning I found I had problems balancing the LM voice with the long drawn out bass notes. My solution was to stand side on to the mic, with the treble side to the fore.

With reference to recent discussion re recording tools, I recorded this using the CAD u37 USB mic. This is an easy tool for 'down and dirty' recording, without too much time needed to set up. However, compared to the C1000, there is a tendency for it to introduce a rather nasty grating sound to some of the bass tones.

Idbury Hill as used by Aldbury Morris Men for a dance in the style of Field Town that I wrote (well probably stole bits from dances I had seen elsewhere). It differs from the normal Bledington tune because it has "slows"

Played on my Penguin of Death Pokerwork

Nice.  The Penguin looks and sounds good.  I'm glad you decided to keep the white buttons.  Who ever heard of a solid black penguin anyway?

Many thanks, once again, to those talented players who have shown me how rich this tune is and have given some direction to my own learning process. Mine is still a Plain Jane version of a work in progress, to be sure, but I can't realistically expect it to get much better in the near term. So here 'tis, TOTM for March:

Great arrangement - demonstrates the wide possibilities for interpreting a tune. :||:

Excellent LM sound: what Corona model is that, a IIIR or a more recent model?
