Poll: Tune of the Month for April 2012
« on: March 24, 2012, 03:06:26 PM »

Hi folks - it's time to vote again! Which tune shall we play this month?

Enrico - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeL-qKVx0aQ - an English hornpipe that fits a one-row beautifully. Is it really the same tune as Jacob? I thought they were different somehow. Hmmm...

Planxty Irwin - a lovely suggestion from OysterBoy, and here played very beautifully by our own Martin Ellison - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSQQHM9vw3E

Tom Tulley's  (also known as Tom Fowler's)- As nominated recently by Birchy, another classic English tune - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibiiFMkCoJw

La Chocca - This month's slightly off the wall suggestion, a *gorgeous* french waltz/mazurka thing, that I believe comes from the playing of La Chavannee, and is, as far as I know traditional. Or does anyone know better? While it's not the easiest tune in the world, nor is it that hard - with a bit of practice, it's perfectly playable on a standard 2 row 8 bass instrument. Here it is played by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting, in 1996(!) - La Chocca is the second tune, and starts at about 2:40 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COQA-uc6yS8

Off we go folks, happy voting!

Cheers,

Clive

I had not heard of Tom Fowler's Hornpipe. I understood that it was called Tom Tolly's Hornpipe (not Tom Tulley's) and that it was native to North Yorkshire, since it is in the Joshua Jackson MS. If it has these other names, this suggests that it was known more widely than I had thought.

Still, it is a great tune and I hope it wins! Only in second place at the moment, so it needs a bit more support. It is also quite easy to play on a D/G box.

Yes, it's also in the Winder ms, and there's a Welsh version called Tom Tollins, with a double length B music which instead of simply repeating the 8 bars goes into a florid variation, much of it an octave higher.

There is also disagreement about the length of the B music. The version I'm most used to, which Mary and I have been playing for years (there's YouTube video) has 8 bars making the whole a standard 32 bar tune; the version many people play has a 12 bar B music.

I'm at work, so no sound, but the version linked above looks like the 8 bar B music too, as far as I can tell from watching the video.

That's a neat trick, Anahata, "reading" music by watching a silent melodeon player! Yes you're right, this is the 32-bar version. The one I'm used to hearing has an extended B music, which I must say I find a bit tedious - I prefer this version, but will probably not attempt to learn it this way, as it would cause some confusion in our local sessions. And in my head.

With my non-admin hat on, I'll admit Planxty Irwin isn't a particular favourite of mine; heard it too many times at sessions I guess. But I do like Martin's version, though let's face it, Martin can make anything sound good! I like Enrico - that's a cracking little tune, a true session classic. Tom Fowler's/Tom Tully's - I've heard it a few times without particularly registering like/dislike. La Chocca is I admit, one of my favourite tunes ever, but then I would say that, wouldn't I?

But if Planxty does win, part of the challenge for me is coming up with a version/arrangement I like; I wasn't a fan of Rusty Gully until I learned it properly, which I doubt I ever would without TOTM, then slowed it down a bit, and then it was ... wow.. this is really nice... ;D

Cheers,

Clive

I'll have to look through Hardcore English to see which version of Tom Tolly's I know regarding tune length but I think it's a wonderful tune!

Doesn't DerekTheNutter also play La Chocca http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRiyuhe9gOs around the 3:00 minute mark?  Anyone have the dots or an ABC for this tune?

Been to Embraud weekends 6-7 times and seen la Chavanée over here in Bath too. But I don't recall I've ever hearing them do la Chocca  (is it a even French word/name?) But then I've not heard Fred Paris do Canal since the time Cutting/Wood played it there, about '96. So it's possible. I know Andy haunts here on and off - we'd love to know where he got his lovely tune.

btw - their  Lusignac is another fabulous waltz (:)

I seem to remember that it wasn't written by La Chavanee, but was written in honour of La Chavanee - the title literally meaning 'family of little owls', alluding to La Chavanee's all night sessions! That would rather imply there is an author of this tune, wouldn't it? I really don't remember it being credited to anyone on Lusignac, and I'm pretty sure I looked at the time. Has anyone got a copy of the CD to hand who can confirm/deny? I ripped mine to hard disc and stuck it in the bowels of the loft a *long* time ago...

The sleeve notes state that it is 'traditional', but provide no further information.

Thanks for the ABC. I'm hoping La Chocca wins since it's already starting to worm itself into my ear.

I'm curious as to why it is spelled La Chocca and La Choca?

It is spelled 'La Choca' on the Lusignac CD, so when I made the transcription, that's how I spelled it too.

Nope, I removed my casting vote! So by the narrowest of margins, Planxty Irwin wins!
