Moving to SMF2; please take a look at the test site
« on: March 26, 2012, 09:03:46 AM »

Hi folks,

I've (finally) been doing some work on moving the forum software up to SMF 2.0.2 (we're currently running 1.1.16) and SimplePortal 2.3.4; the test site is here:

http://forumtest.melodeon.net

Can people take a look, and let me know if they see any funny formatting / missing images?

The following things I already know about:

- On the home page, the '10 latest messages' preview box is stuck directly underneath the announcements box; this is (apparently) quite hard to change without breaking other stuff, and I quite like the effect, so I'm not planning to change that.
- Recent users/messages/smileys/attachments/avatar graphics are missing; that's because the test site is a snapshot from July last year. When it goes live, I'll pull that stuff into the new forum.
- Some fonts are subtlely different; not going to change that, unless something looks dreadful under a particular browser.

Why move to SMF2? Well, to be honest it's just to keep 'up with the times', so to speak. SMF1 hasn't been actively developed in some time, and only security bugs tend to get fixed. There's some new site moderation stuff (which I doubt we'll use), and I haven't found anything extra that an end user would get excited about.

I've tried it on Firefox/Chrome/IE9, and it seems fine, but I'd be interested to know how other browsers do, and in particular, if there is any major differences between how the live site and this test site look.

Cheers,

Clive

Seems OK on Safari on OSX after a quick look, it's even quite readable on OperaMini on my iPhone  ;D

Some form of embedding for videos etc as in facebook would be very useful - does SMF2 provide this? All looks well on Firefox at home.

I'll try it on Army NHS issue MSIE 7 or 8 at work. Wish me luck

.. it was MSIE 7 and a very sturdy firewall, but all seemed to go OK. I'll try a test uploead too.

Hmm, can you list how you got that error so I can try and reproduce it? What browser were you using?

Thanks,

Clive

Potentially yes, via plugins. Mind you, we can probably do that in SMF1 as well!

Seems fine in Opera on/in/under Windows.

After the last forum software upgrade, existing posts containing special and accented characters failed to display. Is there any chance of that happening again, Clive?

I get the same error when clicking the link, but if you clear everything after the .net it works just dandy (FF/OSX)

Odd. What do you see after then .net? If you type forumtest.melodeon.net directly into the browser address bar (rather than clicking the link) do you get the same effect?

I see http://forumtest.melodeon.net/index.php?action=forum which actually works now.
Typing url in directly is fine
Works fine in chrome

When I clicked on the link, I got the 404 error and the following in the address field:

http://forumtest.melodeon.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=d23fe2f792fc0c65014ddc5da7cc814f;action=forum

Removing all characters following the .net worked fine.

Poked around the test site, looks good, couldn't find any issues - Safari on OSX Lion.

Interesting; it seems this happens when you disable cookies for the site. Has anyone that gets this problem disabled cookies? And if so, have you disabled cookies on the live site too? And if so, does that work? (Hint: bet it doesn't!)

If you get this and enable cookies for forumtest.melodeon.net, does the problem go away?

Cheers,

Clive

Double-checked that I had cookies enabled on both sites and then tried the link again and it worked fine.  I suspect that the problem only occurs the first time the test site is accessed.
