Many thanks.  I did try that but the result was flat and grainy, and as I wasn't happy with the music either, I just re-did the whole thing, as above.

OK, here's 'Take 2',  a tad slower and more visible! Not brilliant sound, but it's a phone I'm using.

OK. Much better. Particularly like the left hand. Not bad for a mobile phone either.

Just for fun, here's the same tune with some different chords.

Howard, I see that darkness had fallen when you did the minor chorded version - love both of them, thanks again.

It's nice to get feed back whether good or just constructive.
I liked your version to I'm not to sure what 5/4 is but it sounded good!! I never did well with fractions when the big number was on top.

The version of the tune you played was in 3/4 which is the 'normal' time signature for a waltz-type tune. All that means is that it has 3 beats to the bar - you can count 1-2-3 to the rhythm of the music. In my version you'd count 1-2-3-4-5 to the rhythm. It's not important to understand the theory of this but it is nice, imho, to be able to distinguish different rhythms in different types of tunes. The bottom number is in some ways more 'technical' - it indicates the type of beat in the music, crochet, quaver etc. which unless you're reading dots you probably wouldn't bother about.

Thanks for the info. I think got it. I been taking the sheet music and writing the note above the dot just to get the fingering down (so I don't have to poke around to get the notes which my teacher would rather have me listen to the music then do just that.) then I listen to the tune and try to put it all together. It been working but I should do more by ear I can do simple tunes or ones that I heard for awhile. More practice needed I'm sure.

Here we are folks, my version of Planxty Irwin. There seems to be a bit of a debate as to what time signature this is normally played in; in some places, it's a waltz, in others a jig, so naturally, I chose neither of those and went for a hornpipe! I think it makes a rather good hornpipe too, and when played like this it sounds suspiciously close to, and would probably make a good tune set with English Country Gardens.

Here it is, played on the Hohner Bb/Eb 12 bass preciosa...

Cheers,

Clive

Clive, I never cease to be amazed at the imaginative ways you come up with to play well known tunes. Who'd have thought it would make such a fab sounding hornpipe. Er...well, apart from you I suppose! ???

Hi folks.  Been a bit of a delay as have been busy this month but here's my offering.  A bit rough and ready but there you go.  Slower tune does not mean fewer takes!   :Ph

A first attempt at TOTM in the right month :|bl.  I really liked Martin Ellison's version with the beautiful harmonies and thought I might have a go, so apologies to Martin...
Had huge problems with bellows control and running out of air - I even get that panicky feeling when watching Martin's video, even though I know he always makes it through to the end without running out (:).

Hello all

No apologies needed Spikey - nice version.

Well, this is nice. I haven't been popping in very often lately for various reasons but nice to see melnet is still healthy and inspiring. A trifle daunting to have my P. Irwin up there naked and exposed for all to see but I did record it didn't I? Some lovely versions on here - my favourite type of tune, unnassuming, melodic and versatile. There will be as many different versions as there are players.

Wonderful!

Martin

This was a fun TOTM for me. I tried to develop a bit of a bounce and occasionally follow a bass note with different chords.

Bravo  :||:

It amazes me that anyone can find anything interesting to do with this hackneyed old chestnut. Prior to achieving TOTM status IMO the tune was ready for the knackers yard. I have been proved wrong yet again. All of the melnet postings have drawn out qualities that are as unique as they are creative. I am particularly enamored with this arrangement. I particularly like the use of more than one harmony within the bar.

So that's what it's called. I cast about for a descriptive term but came up blank. Thanks for the kind words.

Thank you Martin.  Bit of a shock to see you had seen it :|bl, but I can see now that you are a regular so I should have known (:) - thanks for recording such a lovely arrangement.  TOTM has indeed been a fantastic resource - being able to download the notes and listen to all the different versions is a great way to learn.  The dilemma being dividing your time between listening to everyone else, and actually trying to play the tune yourself ::).

Not quite the end of the month on this side of the pond. My contribution on an EbBb vintage Hohner beautifully restored by melnet's musical Sasquatch Forrest Crain. My thanks to Forrest not only for the work on the Hohner but for providing the primary musical inspiration for taking up the melodeon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKj9m-INjKY

My version is also indebted to Martin's. A little shaky at times because I'm playing without straps, which I notice from the video has me throwing the box at a couple of points!  Assuming my video actually successfully loads to Youtube, this represents a massive accomplishment for me: not only my first posting on melodeon.net, but my first melodeon recording, my first musical recording of any sort & my first posting on Youtube! As a techno-phobe, I was more intimidated by the issues of figuring out how to work my camcorder, how to download to my laptop & how to format & post to Youtube than the actual playing part!
