Theme of the Month for April 2012: Tunes from Italy
« on: April 01, 2012, 10:48:05 AM »

This month's theme is inspired by the tarentella idea; but I thought it would be nice to open theme up to include not just tarantellas but any music from Italy. That's a pretty broad topic with lots of different possibilities; looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. Is anyone crazy enough to try Fulmine?  >:E

Enjoy,

Clive

One Italian tune and one faux-Italian tune.

s'Marlon learned from a Tiger Moth LP, the name is a play on the fact it is a tune for a dance called a s'Brando. Attached to the end is the fine Rees Wesson Tune Zuppa Inglese which at the least has an Italian name  ;D

Has anyone got the dots/ABC for it? I'll give it a go if there are.  ::)

No dots yet, but I did manage to find this:

I have to say that left me with very mixed feelings, but mostly that's just about everything I dislike about musical composition and performance in a nutshell!  :o

I could not agree more. Like the young man in the video, Riccardo Tesi has remarkable technique. Although his playing is proficient his taste is sometimes questionable.

I hadn't a clue what I could play for this months theme as I didn't know any Italian tunes, so I had a bit of a search of abc's and found Cicerenella which the abc says is a Neopolitan Tarantella. It sounded familiar and possible (not necessarily for me though as it turned out!). Here's me on my umpteenth attempt - by no means perfect but just about holding it together. I found myself holding my breath when I played the vid back! It's played on my Saltarelle Pastourelle III with the low register out on the RH and 3rds out on the left.

Sorry guys, cannot see what you object to in Tesi. He's definitely at the cutting edge/fringe/off the planet depending on your viewpoint, but it is music and fulmine is a solid 12/8 piece, amazingly playable on 2 rows! Fine piece of melodeonism, and frankly wasted on any lesser instrument.  I've been listening to Tesi's latest album on Spotify and will link to it when I get back (Grandma's computer doesn't extend to such things). It contains a slightly "tamed" fulmine. It's idiosyncratic, probably partly improvised, solidly modal (not a blue note in sight) and fresh. Rather reminded me of Marku Lipistö's stuff back in Finland. I personally loved it.

Resource for tarantellas in dots and abc: http://abcnotation.com/searchTunes?q=tarantella&f=c&o=a&s=0

My playing level is not very high, but I started working on Funiculi Funicula just for fun. The song used to be used in an ad for The Gold Buffet restaraunt, which is a very funny association, plus it reminds me of riding the funicular in Bergamo (but not the funicular in Monmartre!)

The great thing about Funiculi Funicula on my Binci 3-voice G/D is that it gives such a starring role to the B major chord in the next-to-last phrase.

I think this month's theme is really challenging. You've risen to it McGrooger - fabulous.

I was just expressing a personal dislike for the type of music and everything about it, not saying it's not music or that it isn't clever, just not for me! My mixed feelings about the piece were caused by my admiration of the technical excellence of the playing of this challenging piece but I can assure you it won't be playing on my iPod in the foreseeable future!

Just because you can doesn't mean you should.  ;D

Here's a little something I came across while looking for Italian tunes. Interesting use of the thumb on the right hand though not much happening with the basses. Can anyone work out what tuning the box is?

Ellis,

I'm not certain about this, but I have seen, in Italy, an extension of the du botte system where the inside row is a set of opposite direction repeats. I think this might be the system in the video.
