Thanks Bob.

I like the tune for a start, but am also hoping to join my local morris side when my life calms down a little. Thank you for the suggestion, I realise I do play most things staccato, including the guitar. I will make a conscious effort to smooth things out. I can also hear the too-short note now you mention it.

I wonder if my Hohner is that clacky... I don't know much anything about sound recording, so it could be the mic accentuating those sounds. I do quite like clacking and air button noises from melodeons though, it's part of their charm!

While Bob has given you really good advice, don't be too hard on yourself, to the point that you enjoy it less. For just 10 weeks, you are doing really, really well!
My only advice to any beginner, would be to play slowly until you can play it comfortably without mistakes. Then, start to speed up the tune a bit at a time. Enjoy and well done!

Personally I far prefer people playing staccato for dance than, even Sherborne ones, than mushy legato (piano accordion).

ps Extraordinarily good playing for one of so few weeks

Normally, I would agree with you, Lester, but Orange in Bloom is, in my opinion, one of the few exceptions. My Morris side would not be happy if I played it too staccato.

Thank you for the kind compliments and advice. I have tried playing it more legato, and tried making a video as well. Unfortunately the stage fright got me and I messed up! I will practice OiB quite a bit more before attempting any recordings.

I have just realised I can switch the camera around on my phone, so here is a quick video of another BS tune (Beginners' Showcase that is), just because. Quite boring, without frills, but I think fairly mistake free (of course it has my trademarks of playing fast and loose with timings).

I will give the uploads a rest after this, promise.

Excellent work - good to see you're getting on so well and enjoying your (first) box.

Nicely played, steady pace, good left hand,  (:)

A couple of observations:
  • When you change bellows direction you appear to rotate the bellows which is not a good thing. The rotation delays the change the air direction from the bellows and so causes the following note to start late. Probably not a problem with this tune but a bad habit that you should consider working on.
  • It is normal to play StP with 2 As and then 2 Bs rather than the single ones you played

Sorry Lester, could you clarify both points please?

When changing the direction of the bellows, do you mean I am rotating vertically, or horizontally (or both)? I haven't had any tuition on bellows control so I've been happily and obliviously heaving them about.

I thought I did play two As and two Bs...  ??? You do mean "twice through the A music and then twice through the B music" right?

Thanks for taking the time to help  :D :|glug

Thanks, Helena. I will make it to a Alton Steady Session one of these days...!

I am not qualified enough to give playing advice, but I learned a lot of this excellent video of Stiamh:

That might be what Lester's first observation is about.

The rotation I mean is in the vertical plane ie the bass end is at 11 o'clock on the pushes and 12 o'clock on the pulls. On looking again I may have been overstating the effect.  :P

Re 2A's and 2B's you are only playing 1 of each, here is my rendition of how it is normally played

Thanks, those videos have helped. Watching myself again, I can really see what you mean. Must do better!

In my defence, the abc file I learnt StP is from the Alton Steady Session tune list (found here), and is notated how I played it there. I have watched other videos of this tune, so I should have really picked up on the repetitions though  :P

The Happy Wanderer.......I don't think I have ever seen anyone smile so much while playing the melodeon. It obviously makes you very happy and it's uplifting to watch! Keep at it!

Hi, happy Wanderer,

bravo!

I like the little embellishments in the melody and the nice endings you give to the tunes. At the end of the Ennstaler Polka it took me completely by surprise and put a happy smile on my face. ;D

I see you press sometimes two buttons simultaniously. That is good. Maybe you want to try to play a tune completely with two voices as for example here in this version of the Ennstaler Polka. (When you try it, it will maybe be sound better with muted L-reed, but you could try different reed-combinations.)

One unrelated question: Why is the cross in the lower left corner of the poster on the wall blue when all others are red?

The blue is for Mary's halo. I actually painted it. The funny thing is, that painting was an image that just popped into my head one day while reading about Abraham in the bible. I think the idea came somewhat from Pysanka eggs.

I suggest to avoid two-note chords on the pull with buttons 5 & 6 and 9 & 10 as these intervals sound dissonant. You could pull buttons 3 & 6 and 7 & 10 respectively.

I think the chordal accompaniment on the second long note doesn't sound right to me.
