Poll: Tune of the Month for May 2012
« on: April 23, 2012, 11:49:41 PM »

La Choca (spelling corrected!) - Last month's off the wall suggestion did very well, but missed out by the narrowest of margins. So, here we go again - a *gorgeous* french waltz/mazurka thing, that I believe comes from the playing of La Chavannee, and is, as far as I know traditional. Or does anyone know better? While it's not the easiest tune in the world, nor is it that hard - with a bit of practice, it's perfectly playable on a standard 2 row 8 bass instrument. Here it is played by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting, in 1996(!) - La Choca is the second tune, and starts at about 2:40 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COQA-uc6yS8

Paddy Carey's - a 48 bar jig with plenty of drive; is it English, or Irish? Well, no-one really knows but it's certainly popular in England. Fits beautifully on one row. And here's Chris Wood and Andy Cutting playing it (same gig as the above video I think) - it's the first tune here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct-oGOAQAzk

Galopede - good idea Ollie; high time we gave this one a shot. I'm not sure if we've polled this one before, but if not, we really should have. It's a cracker; 32 bar or 48 bar reel, depending on how many B's and C musics you play (the 32 bar is 2xA, 1xB, 1xC); and usually played in G (but I think it's in C in this video):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMtli08M3cc

Molly Oxford, also known as Stepback - my favourite morris tune... ever. Here played by Ed Rennie, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYQMZeNA5aA, and also here http://www.treewind.co.uk/melnet/mp3/idburyhill-stepback.mp3 by our own Anahata (2nd tune, 1:07 minutes in)

There you go, choose from that lot! Happy voting and don't forget to try this month's tune and theme!  :||: :||: :||: :||:

Yep - I think it's probably the hardest choice I can remember here too.

I voted for Molly Oxford as it's such a great tune plus there is a better chance of my being able to play it before the end of May ::).
But could we have Paddy Carey's and La Choca back in the poll for next month if they don't win please?  These two videos of Chris and Andy are one of the reasons I started learning the melodeon last year (had a go at fiddle but the rest of the family couldn't stand the screeching) - and watching these always make me smile, especially the bit just before La Choca starts where it looks like Chris is trying to signal to Andy (this it what it looks like to an untrained eye anyhow!) that they're going into the next tune... (:)

I haven't made my mind up yet, but I have been working on La Choca which is quite challenging on a D/G if you try and follow the dots exactly - I mean the ABC posted last month during the poll.
The Andy Cutting clip is lovely (of course) but the tune is hard to pick out because of the fiddle overlay, and AC is playing a modified version of the ABC anyway.
Here is a slightly clearer version (and beautiful) of La Choca (the third tune) from Derekthenutter; again the tune is slightly different to the posted ABC - or it sounds different to me.
At some point I'll probably post my own attempt at it, so I'll vote for a different tune - just to give me a push to learn something else..
