My first melodeon
« on: April 26, 2012, 05:06:47 PM »

Hooray!!! Today I bought my first melodeon and I'm pleased as punch! I have bought a Pre-Pokerwork in C/F, from Mike Rowbotham in St. Ives. I am a total beginner and he is going to give me a lesson to start me off when I collect it from him on monday. At last, I can start teaching myself and will find melodeon.net so useful. I am looking forward to being good enough to take part in the Tune of the Month series. I fell in love with this old instrument, it sounds as sweet as a nut! :||:

Lesson 2: Divorce your breathing from that of the bellows before you expire!

Congratulations and good luck.  It's a good choice - Hohner definitely mad better actions back then and had a much sweeter tuning with slightly less tremolo than is commonly used on today's models.  I have a mellow Hohner Club (C/F) that lives by my armchair.  Only problem may come when you've learnt a few tunes and want to play in your local session - all the others are likely to have D/G boxes, but no-one is perfect.

Thank you. That took years of practice, you know...

My other melodeon's a fiddle, but one of my Hohners has six strings! I also play a very red Hawkins Bazaar in C and a generic Klingenthaler spoon bass in F.!! My other pets (played) are gobirons - Hohner Marine Band in C, Hohner Tremolo in D and a Chinese Thingy Tremolo in G.
