Right, that's it then. Slow and majestic on my C/F box it is...

Well, it's played on the C/F club at least... perhaps no slower than anyone else's, but should be about right for some dancers...

Lovely speed, the only dancable one so far, well for some one of my age  ;)

Yes, Anahata's is a beautiful sound, a bit nippy for me to dance it, but close.
Interesting others call it 'Step Back' where we caper back and indeed the whole dance has no backsteps just capers - hence the slow nature to allow time to jump.
I agree with LdT it's not a natural melodeon tune, I'm struggling, and being busy dancing is not helping,  perhaps my love is through the dance.

Hence the "sort of" :P I think it is danceable at that speed, but only with a fit side and one which would tolerate the little pauses that I snuck in :P

There's a lot about this tune that feels "back to front" for a melodeon player - pull notes that you expect to be push and vice versa, chord sequences that seem to go in the wrong direction, patterns of notes your fingers aren't used to, and an ending in "the wrong key". It's almost as if it's a "normal" tune played backwards.
There's no quick fix: you just have to get used to it, and in doing so push the boundaries of your musical experience. It will be good for you and you'll find many hard tunes easier to play afterward!   :|||:
I think this sums up this tune really well - spot on, Anahata. I think this month's postings have been really interesting - all different and all fab in their own way. But...it is a tricky blighter to play - a real challenge. I've been working on it for months on end and it never feels easy. At the same time, the tune is surely (one of?) the greatest of all Morris tunes and demands things that really pay off in playing other tunes. It would be especially nice to see some postings on the beginners showcase - if you think your playing is still developing have a go and if you're really brave share it with other Melnetters - I'm sure you'll get nothing but praise and encouragement.  :||: :|||:

"Back to front," or otherwise, here's mine. I've really enjoyed working on this tune. Thanks to everyone for the comments and musical examples that helped me figure out what it was all about.

No sort of about it, that's perfect dancing speed for me (without the pauses). :P Lovely RH harmony too.

I agree with LdT it's not a natural melodeon tune,

Like the vast majority of Wychwood Forest tunes, it's very much a fiddle or pipe-and-tabor tune.  For my money the best morris tunes are Field Town and Sherborne, with Longborough and Bledington coming up close behind.

Nice work - like the change of pace and the dreaminess of the slow passages.

For my money the best morris tunes are Field Town and Sherborne, with Longborough and Bledington coming up close behind.
Field Town tunes are great (this one included - I'm really enjoying the variety in the renditions of it making it a great TOTM) apart from Balance the Straw, which I think is perhaps the worst morris tune ever.

There's some great Bampton tunes too, especially for some of the dances people don't seem to do that often (The Thursfield, for example). Would it be too 'niche' to have a specific morris tradition as Theme of the Month? (even those who have no knowledge or interest in morris can get up to speed pretty quickly on potential tunes via the Ring ABC thingy).

Apologies for the thread drift, I really need to try and learn the tune on the Melodeon...

Taking time out from what I should be doing, here's a quick take on Molly Oxford ... sorry, Old Molly Oxford  ;) Been playing this tune for donkey's years, I'll admit; I've always liked it.

I 'am having trouble with the second measure the most I don't know why other than I never heard this tune before.
It does grow on you !

Jeff Smith plated a really nice danceable version with just the right amount of bounce.  I've only been playing for a few weeks so I'm not ready for a recording but I am seeing what I want to aim for.
