Thank you button
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:18:44 AM »

Any chance of adding a simple 'Thank you' button?  It'd save posting a reply just to add thanks.

I don't get it..... clicking a thank you button is just as easy as replying with a post or pm saying 'thank you'? If its too much effort to write a reply then don't bother.

I hope this helps you to 'get it':
It's about NOT cluttering the the thread with messages that say only 'thank you'

You seem to miss the point that the goal is to show appreciation... by whatever means; in the light of that I really can't understand the need for your comment about 'too much effort' ...being 'nice' costs nowt.  You have a pm.

Then send the thank you as a PM if you are worried about cluttering?

It wouldn't bother me if there was a thread with several thank you's..I have a thing called a 'scroll button'. :p

There are a couple of add-ons to SMF that do this sort of thing.  If there is popular demand we could investigate.

It's a nice idea, but I'm not sure how it would work.

Would it attach an icon or bubble to a post, with the name of the eternally grateful recipient, or would it add another post in the thread with no words but just a Thank You icon? ???
Which we would then all read to see who's saying thank you!  ;D

Don't know if you'll be able to see it on this example:

I can see the button but not the effect of pressing it...

It only works for subscribers... can you see the box 'The following members of MHF thanked this poster'?   If not , it simply lists those who've 'thanked' by user name.
I've known more than 30+ on a single posting, if everyone had posted a message it would have made the topic exceedingly difficult to follow ::)

My reasons for suggesting a 'thank you button':
In the topic 'Tunes from Wensleydale and Swaledale' the music for  "The Self - Kit White" was viewed 10 times... I'm presuming that all 10 appreciated it being made available but
may not have wanted to add 10 'thanks' posts.

Two 'thank you' mods for SMF here,  if you follow the links you can find screenshots.

I'm all in favour of someone saying 'thank you' having asked a specific question, ideally once the thread has run its course rather than after every reply!

However, the thought of having to scroll though 20 computer assisted 'thank you's when someone posts something useful is a bit stultifying. Basically I think a post should 'add' something (even if that's only humour) ;)  My thank you to Bob Ellis for his Dales course expanded on what happened for those who stayed away and .. ran to 9 lines.

So if we institute some sort of autothanks button, could we please make it a site option to filter these out of the general flow of discussion  ::)

I also agree that if something is worth saying 'thank you' for, it is much more meaningful for the recipient of the thanks to read a real message rather than see the result of someone having merely clicked on a button. That's just too easy.

Thanks Chris that was the point behind the suggestion... sadly people who may want to say thanks might be deterred by imposing excessive scrolling on others.

I don't think that the 'thank you' button would add additional posts, it just appends the words thank you or possibly a smiley type thing at the bottom of the message.
