This is a form of "reputation". The idea is that posts are ranked in some way, by people recommending or thanking them. Generally then this translates into something on the user's profile to let others know how "helpful" they are. I've been on fora which have this function and take it from me, it can be nothing but trouble. Sometimes it's OK, but I just don't think that it's really necessary on this forum. If people want to say thank you then they can post or send a PM.

Thanks Chris that was the point behind the suggestion... sadly people who may want to say thanks might be deterred by imposing excessive scrolling on others.
I don't think that the 'thank you' button would add additional posts, it just appends the words thank you or possibly a smiley type thing at the bottom of the message.

The devil (as ever) is in the detail here. If all this is is a verisimilitude of the wonderful Facebook "like"/"unlike" button - well, I'm too chuffed to comment  :-\

In view of the above, I'd be in favour of a "thank you" button, provided that we can have a "go boil your head" button as well.   >:(

It only works for subscribers... can you see the box 'The following members of MHF thanked this poster'?   If not , it simply lists those who've 'thanked' by user name.

You don't see that box if you aren't a subscriber.
If there was a little box that said "nn subscribers thanked this poster" with a clickable pop-up llink to list their names that would be unobtrusive enough, but I really don't think any of that is necessary, and I am suspicious of anything that looks like a FB "like" button and even more of anything that might hint at ranking users by helpfulness or any other characteristic.
It's quite fun having post count listed but that's uncontentious enough not to matter.

I probably would be too if... I knew what the L you're referring to ;D

That would appear to be one of the unfortunate consequences, personally I care not for the sad, ranking nonsense common on all US derived forum software... unless one's looking for an emetic.

I understand it's a popular social networking site, M'Lud.
Not that I touch the stuff myself, of course...

Dunno about that, but there is definitely a 'SMITE' facility add in for SMF.  Being smitten by heros, and I think even respected greybeards 'hurts' you more, and I think the various 'super' users with admin rights can also "unsmite" one.

SMITE was in use in another forum I was on and cause no little disturbance in the Force.   Eventually I put in a subversive post comparing it to that sniper, picking off internees in the film Schindler's list. Others chipped in and it suddenly disappeared.

Any facility that can like/unlike/whatever anonymously is probably not to the good. As above, I simply feel people should make a positive addition to the thread and sign that (ideally with own name) and stand by their view.

Personally I'm more worried by this :o

Mark this down as a record, I 100%  agree with Chris.
