Poll: Tune of the Month for June 2012
« on: May 25, 2012, 11:35:03 PM »

You know what? I'm in a good mood! Since all the tunes in last month's poll seemed to be well received, lets bring them all back in this months poll. So we have:

La Choca - A *gorgeous* french waltz/mazurka thing, that I believe comes from the playing of La Chavannee, and is, as far as I know traditional. Or does anyone know better? While it's not the easiest tune in the world, nor is it that hard - with a bit of practice, it's perfectly playable on a standard 2 row 8 bass instrument. Here it is played by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting, in 1996(!) - La Choca is the second tune, and starts at about 2:40 mins. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COQA-uc6yS8 (a quick caveat here from those trying to learn it off ABC, if it's different to what Andy's playing, don't worry too much about it - there is no definitive source for this tune, and so no right or wrong version.)

Paddy Carey's - a 48 bar jig with plenty of drive; is it English, or Irish? Well, no-one really knows but it's certainly popular in England. Fits beautifully on one row. And here's Chris Wood and Andy Cutting playing it (same gig as the above video I think) - it's the first tune here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct-oGOAQAzk

Galopede - good idea this from Ollie; high time we gave this one a shot. I'm not sure if we've polled this one before, but if not, we really should have. It's a cracker; 32 bar or 48 bar reel, depending on how many B's and C musics you play (the 32 bar is 2xA, 1xB, 1xC); and usually played in G (but I think it's in C in this video):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMtli08M3cc

... and one more new one to make up the numbers... what to replace Molly Oxford with? Only one choice really...

Old Tom of Oxford! Yes indeed, another fantastic morris tune. Now, I thought it would be easy to get a video for this; just stick Spiers and Boden Old Tom into youtube... but no, either the video quality is awful, or the sound is. Had a lot of fun trying though! But how about this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWGDx1kgmDQ ... as played by Chris Wood and Andy Cutting (again!); Old Tom starts at 3:13 mins roughly. [ What's that addictive little first tune called by the way? ]

Happy voting!
